At Leigh on Mendip, our aim is to equip every child with the mathematical skills and confidence they need for everyday life - both now and in the future. We also want pupils to experience the enjoyment of maths as a creative, engaging and fascinating subject in its own right. We strive to develop confident, resilient learners who can:
➕ Think logically and critically,
➕ Solve problems independently,
➕ And apply their mathematical understanding across the curriculum and in the wider world.
Our Approach
Daily Maths Lessons
A daily maths lesson is taught in all classes from Year 1 to Year 6, focusing on fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving.
In Early Years, mathematical thinking is developed through play-based activities, songs, games and hands-on experiences.
Schemes We Use
We follow the White Rose Maths and Number Sense schemes to ensure a clear, consistent and progressive approach across the school. These schemes:
Are fully aligned with the 2014 National Curriculum,
Ensure small steps in learning for deep understanding,
Emphasise mastery and revisiting key concepts over time,
Support a wide range of learners through scaffolded activities and challenge tasks.
Our maths curriculum includes the following areas of study:
Number
Place value
Addition and subtraction
Multiplication and division
Fractions (including decimals and percentages in Key Stage 2)
Geometry
Properties of shape
Position and direction
Measurement
Statistics (from Year 2 onwards)
Ratio and Proportion (Year 6)
Algebra (Year 6)
