1) Research which colleges need letters and when the application deadlines are. Please note: UC and CSU schools WILL NOT need letters of recommendation.
2) Request a letter from your counselor at least 3 weeks prior to the deadline, or by December 1st, whichever is first. Be aware of school breaks and days off, and factor this into your timeline.
3) Fill out the student brag sheet (examples below).
4) Contact your counselor to request the letter of recommendation. You can do this in an e-mail and/or with a college appointment with your counselor.
5) Be organized! Make sure you have your college list; your deadlines; your brag sheet; and any other information that will be helpful.
6) With some applications, a letter from a teacher AND a counselor is necessary. To request a letter from a Teacher(s), follow the same process as listed above
Brag sheets are a way for you to help your counselor and teachers write letters of recommendation. These forms give them more insight into who you are outside of school and your interests. Fill out these forms, and share them with your counselor and teachers when you ask them for a letter of recommendation!
Please remember that a letter of recommendation request should be asked WEEKS in advance. This is to ensure whoever you are asking has enough time to write you an appropriate letter.
