Independent Study PE
Approval Guidelines
Independent Study Physical Education students must be performing at an advanced level of competency and be individually ranked at the National, Olympic, or Elite levels. Team sports are not part of the CVUSD approved criteria for Independent Study Physical Education. ISPE applicants maintain a minimum of overall grade point average of 2.0. To remain qualified for ISPE, the student must also satisfactorily meet five of the six physical fitness tests per the FITNESSGRAM criteria.
Martial Arts High school students must have a 1st degree black belt and actively competing with a ranking. The student should be a member of a State or National Martial Arts Association and have a membership card.
BMX Must rank in the top three in at least three competitions in the past twelve months or be nationally ranked in the top ten in their age group.
Dance Student must be at pre-professional and also be “in-company” in the dance school/academy program. Must have proof of performances: program from the performance with student’s name highlighted (Dance school/academy recital programs will be considered).
All dance competitions must be solo competitions (no dance teams) with proof of scoring/points and student’s name.
Equestrian Student must be competing and jumping at 3’ or higher for high school. Documentation must be provided to verify competition enrollment. For western equestrian competitions (barrel racing), the student must be provide a copy of the pink slips and competing in the 1-D or 2-D competitions and placing 1st or 2nd.
Golf Must rank in the top three in at least three competitions in the past twelve months or be nationally ranked in the top in their age group.
Gymnastics Middle school must be performing at level 7 for high school students.
Ice Skating High school students must be competing at the “novice” level and completing “double jumps.” Documentation must be provided to verify competition level of enrollment in competitions.
Skiing Must have proof of skiing Junior Olympic times or faster in the past twelve months.
Swimming Must have proof of Southern California times or better in at least three swimming styles in the student’s age category.
Tennis Must have a USTA/SoCal ranking and a membership card. At the high school level the student should be USTA ranked at 200 or better. We will not accept Ventura County Junior Tennis Assoc. competitions.
Other Please submit documentation for consideration if the sport is not listed above. Documentation must show how the student is performing at an advanced ranked at the National, Olympic or Elite level.
