Our central idea is 'Innovative thinking may lead to scientific and technological advances.'
Using the Concepts of form, function and responsibility, the lines of inquiry we will explore are:
How advances in technology allowed humans to step foot on the moon
What our solar system is like
How we can look after our planet and preserve it for future generations
Whilst the rest of Year 6 were at the Isle of Wight, the children who stayed at school had a fantastic week!
They completed treasure hunts around the school, created impressive clay self-portraits and even made their own pizzas!
Here are some photos from the week to show you what they did in the final week of term.
This week, Year 6 were finally able to create their electrical buzzer games!
They worked hard to paint the base of the game and connect the electrical circuits correctly in order for the game to work. Although it wasn't always straightforward, the children certainly persevered.
Here you can see a few examples of the finished games. We are hoping to test these out with some younger children at Hartley next term.
On Friday 5th May, Year 6 enjoyed their Coronation party and picnic!
They had a lovely afternoon of games, including the hoop game, football rounders and the one and only parachute! Fortunately, the weather was very kind for us that day.
Thank you for sending such lovely food, including a few homemade cakes. They were certainly enjoyed (and there may be enough for another picnic next week)!
During science, Year 6 have continued learning about our Solar System. This week, we focused on what shadows can tell us; the children had to draw the outline of their shadow to see how the position of the sun changed throughout the day.
Year 6 effectively became human sundials! They noticed that the shadow was longest at 9am and got gradually shorter throughout the day, as well as rotating position.
After midday, the shadow gradually started to increase in length, although the final measurement was at 3pm, so it is likely that the length of the shadows would have increased much further.
Here, you can see how James' shadow at 9am was taller than Jack!
In Music, the children have been focusing on the theme of identity. They have also been developing their call and response skills using the name game. Watch the video clip here!
In DT this term, Year 6 will be creating their own electrical buzzer game. Firstly, they had to research other buzzer games and afterwards, they had to design their own games. These will be created later this term!
On Friday, Year 6 were lucky to speak to some members of the local policing team. They learnt lots of information, including the truth that police officers do enjoy doughnuts and coffee! Year 6 listened well and were able to have their photos taken in the police car (fortunately, not in the back seat!).
