Our central idea for this term is 'Discoveries can be made through exploration of the world.'
Using the Key Concepts of Causation, Function and Responsibility, the lines of inquiry we will explore are:
Why people decide to undertake a journey and what their journeys are like
How journeys help to connect people and places around the world
How exploration enables people to take responsibility for the world they live in
On the last day of term, Year 6 learnt a new skill - quilling! This was quite challenging to do and involved delicately wrapping strips of paper to form various coil shapes, which were used to create patterns and artwork. Although the children didn't have long to complete this task, they did an amazing job!
Here are the completed birdhouses that Year 6 created - there were lots of incredible designs. They have now all been installed in the woods, so let's hope that they are used by the local wildlife!
Through their unit of Inquiry, Year 6 have been learning all about exploration. From the Romans and Vikings to modern day explorers such as Alastair Humphreys, Year 6 have been discussing the different methods used for travel and reasons for exploring new lands.
In their writing over the past few weeks, Year 6 have worked incredibly hard to produce these beautiful information texts about Rick Hansen, a paralympic athlete, who also travelled the world in his wheelchair. They worked hard to plan and design these information texts, and worked hard to make them interesting to read. Well done Year 6!
In DT, Year 6 have been designing and creating their own birdhouses!
Firstly, they had to conduct research into different designs to think about what features they would like to include. They also had to think about materials, the process to create the birdhouse and how it would be attached to a tree.
Following this, they spent a morning creating their birdhouses. They had to adapt their plans slightly, due to the available materials, but used a range of techniques including measuring, sawing, hammering and glue-gunning to create their birdhouses.
We are sure that the finished pieces will be fantastic!
In Art, Year 6 have been developing our watercolour painting skills. To begin with, they used value charts to create lighter and darker shades of painting. Following this, the children then used tutorials to trial different watercolour techniques. Here, you can see a range of techniques, including wet on wet, wet on dry and dry brush. Later in the term, Year 6 will learn some alternative methods. They were very surpised to see some of the effects that could be created with different amounts of water!
In Science this term, Year 6 have begun learning all about space. They learnt about the planets in our Solar System and the order of each planet from our Sun. Following this, the children have also learnt about two theories that were created to explain space: Geocentric and Heliocentric. Here, you can see some information about the two theories and the people who believe(d) in them.
