Our central idea is 'Resolving conflict may enable humans to live peacefully with one another.'
Using the Concepts of change, causation and perspective, the lines of inquiry we will explore are:
How conflict affects everyone in society in different ways.
How conflicts have changed over time.
How conflicts started in different places.
During this unit of learning, Year 6 have learnt all about the mass evacuation that occurred during World War II. Using their knowledge, they have written stories about an evacuee's journey. The children have worked incredibly hard on these and have produced some outstanding work. Please read some of the examples below - you can click on the document to view the work clearly.
Last Thursday, Year 6 visited the RAF Museum - they had a fantastic time!
Whilst walking around the museum, they were able to view a wide array of planes, from the earliest models to planes that were in use until very recently. They were amazed at the size of the planes - some of them were huge! Year 6 also noticed that each plane had its own unique decoration, are were able to find out information about why they were decorated in this way, such as to be camoflaged in the sky.
As well as this, Year 6 also enjoyed their WWII classroom experience. They had to behave as children in the 1930s, and had a chance to practise their handwriting (using a pen dipped in ink) and their arithmetic using pounds, pennies and shillings. Although the children enjoyed the session, they were pleased to return to today's schooling!
Year 6 have been thoroughly enjoying their learning about World War II this term. They have been able to recall their learning about the outbreak of the war, the Allies and Axis countries, evacuation and the Blitz. Last week, Year 6 learnt all about Anne Frank and the Holocaust. They could explain some of the restrictions that were enforced, and how this affected the life of Anne Frank and her family. They then worked in small groups to order events from World War II into chronological order.
During French, Year 6 have been developing their reading skills, using the knowledge they have developed about World War II. They were given a short reading task with some key vocabulary, and had to translate the text into English. Everybody did incredibly well and used their detective skills to understand the information they were presented with.
Following this, Year 6 also learnt the names of some of the countries involved in World War II. They played games to develop their pronunciation and listening skills.
