It has been an incredible start to our Term 2 topic - Ancient Romans! The children participated in fun activities, re-enacting a Roman-style invasion on the Celtic tribe. To engage in the war, the children made swords and shields then had a fun battle on the playground. This raised so many questions about the topic which we have explored throughout the term which is linked to our transdisciplinary theme: ‘Where We are in Place and Time and our central idea,’ ‘Past Migration and Invasion Influence and Shape our Lives.’
As the term progressed, the children learnt about different aspects of the Roman empire, the army and their lifestyle, through our lines of inquiry: past events that affect our lives, how migration can lead to change in lifestyle and why we should learn from the past. The children were able to apply their knowledge by writing some brilliant non-chronological reports, including key writing features and grammar skills.
They have really enjoyed our class reader, Romans on the Rampage which told the story of a Roman boy who is obsessed about chariot racing. This humorous book gave the children a glimpse of what a rich Roman boy’s life was like.
In Maths they have learnt about Roman numerals, multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100. It was great to see the children applying their knowledge of Roman numerals in their writing.
Other highlights included our Christmas performance, where they sang beautifully; and finally making replicas of Roman artefacts for a Roman museum. What an incredible term of fun learning!
The Year 4 team would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
