This term we have had a wide range of clubs which the children enjoyed. At DPA we feel it important to provide children with the opportunities to explore new interests and build on their culture capital.
Over the past term at EYFS/KS1 we’ve had a variety of clubs including gymnastics, creative, cooking, Disney, choir and multiskills. At KS2 we offered French, international cooking, basketball, football, creative arts, dance, choir, strategy and Lego club. We’ve had about 33% of children across the school attend an after school club this term.
In EYFS/KS1 cooking club they have made rocky road and biscuits - the smell of them cooking was delicious!
Football club helped the children to work together as a team and use their skills and strengths to support each other. Some of these children have also represented the school in recent football competitions.
In strategy club at KS2, they have used different games including chess to develop their mind set and way of thinking in order to beat their opponent.
In our KS2 French club, our DPA linguists have demonstrated their international mindedness and communicative skills. They have joined in a range of activities such as games, art, food tasting and even cooking! The highlights of our term have been our exploration of Pointillism, Georges Seurat’s art technique and our rendition of a famous Parisian landmark. We had a great time cooking and tasting French delicacies too! Crêpes, madeleines, tarragon chicken, brioches… Miam, miam!
Our popular international cooking club has seen children virtually travel the world through food from China to North Africa, France, Mexico, Italy…
Our learners have shown incredible collaborative skills, curiosity about new flavours and cooking techniques. They have truly been risk takers and internationally-minded learners.
I cannot wait to see which part of the world our intrepid chefs will explore next.
We played 5 matches in a football tournament and started really well against some tough opposition. A drawn first game gave us some confidence going into match two. However, unbeknown to us, we came up against the strongest team in the tournament who duly peppered our goal for the whole ten minutes. Some outstanding goalkeeping kept the score low but it impacted the way the children approached the next few games. The children represented the school really well and enjoyed themselves for the whole afternoon.
We played against Cherry Orchard in the league and despite not having enough players and having to borrow some of theirs, we managed to work well as a team and create opportunities for Aston to score 3 goals!
We also competed in a tournament against 5 other schools. The children enjoyed the opportunity to represent the school and their teamwork shone through both on and off the pitch. Ronny scored the only goal of the tournament - from past the half way line in the final match! The children's faces showed how much they appreciated that goal!
We entered two virtual Sportshall Athletics competitions this term; Year 3/4 and Year 5/6. The children completed a range of activities including vertical jump, speed bounce, chest push and shuttle run. Their scores were collected and sent off to our local School Games Organiser who then compared them with scores from other local primary schools.
Out of 13 schools who took part, we came 4th in the Year 3/4 competition and 5th in the Year 5/6 competition - well done to all of KS2!
