Cost: $1750
Special Considerations:
See below.
Objective
Allow students to have hands-on experience in relief work in Florida related to Hurricane Ian.
Description
Students will travel to the Fort Myers area in Florida and help with relief efforts connected to the devastation brought to the region by Hurricane Ian. At the time of the printing of this catalog, plans for Ian relief in Florida through the major disaster agencies were still in fairly formative stages. As March approaches, Latin will have a better sense of the safe volunteer work students will/can do. At present, it appears students may be able to do physical clean-up work, some basic housing rehab, food bank volunteering, as well as work directly with victims of this Florida disaster. Accommodations will be a hotel or house rental (four students per room/two per bed). Lastly, students will spend some of their downtime exploring area attractions and offerings.
Student Requirements and Expectations
Looking for students who are willing to work hard, have positive attitudes, and are passionate about the opportunity to help the victims of this tragedy. Participants will need to have patience and flexibility, as major disasters like this one make it difficult for relief agencies to plan and execute efficiently. Sturdy work shoes/boots (no tennis shoes) and long work pants are required. Daily journal entries will be assigned.
About the Faculty
Tim Cronister has led similar student relief projects during past US Project Weeks for Hurricane Katrina and Harvey, as well as for the tornadoes in Joplin, MO and Moore, OK.
Special Considerations
Accommodation considerations - Students will be expected to sleep in shared accommodations.
COVID related information - Some venues may require proof of COVID vaccination or negative test. Students are encouraged to travel with this information and provide it, if required. Please contact the project leaders or School Nurse with any questions or concerns.
Expectation for physical activity - This project will require a significant amount of physical exertion and possibly some physical discomfort. Students on this project should be willing to deal with discomfort, at times, in inclement weather. Students are expected to be able to participate fully in all these daily activities.
Scheduling (Out-of-Town) - This project will have time commitment outside of the M-F (8-4) typical school week. Please note that there is an expectation that students are able to attend the whole time the project is running.
Sensitive Topics - Students will be exposed to sensitive topics., Supervision during the day - Students might be unsupervised for short periods of time during the course of the day.
Supervision while sleeping - Students might be unsupervised for extended periods of time during sleeping hours (hotel, hostels, etc.).
Transportation considerations: Latin faculty - Students will be transported by Latin School faculty chaperones drivers.
