Objective
Learn to make one-of-a-kind jewelry in fine metals.
Description
This project is designed for the beginning metalsmith with little or no experience. Students will create at least two one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces while learning to saw, drill, sand, and polish metal, set stones, texture/patina, form, use cold connections, and torch solder. The skills learned this week will enable students to create a variety of rings, cuffs, bangles, necklaces, earrings, and pendants, as well as sculptural objects. Students will also be introduced to hollow forming, enameling, and instructor-guided work with silver/gold. Please see the itinerary for daily workshops and planned lunch spots.
Student Requirements and Expectations
Participants will practice and learn beginning metalsmith techniques by doing hands-on mini-projects each day which we will document on a blog. Expect dirty shop hands and be ready to engage safely in a professional studio environment. All participants must have short, natural nails for ease of material handling and safety. Participants will have the option to meet and be dismissed from Benches all week. Students can also take CTA transportation with a faculty member if needed.
About the Faculty
Ms. Kerrigan is a professional artist and visual arts educator at Latin. Her work explores light and heavy metals and is included in private and corporate collections. She has maintained a metal studio in the West Loop since 2000.
Ms. Patton is a long time international teacher & librarian, working in the Middle East, Central America, Asia and Africa over the last 20+ years. Her international experience has fed a lifelong interest in the arts and of crafting from all over the world. She has recently returned to the states and has joined Latin as an US Librarian. She is looking forward to joining the metalsmiths on their exploration of the craft.
Special Considerations
Students will work with tools, chemical solvents and soldering equipment in a shop setting. Students will be provided personal protective equipment and will be trained in managing risk within these activities. Please contact the faculty leaders with any questions or concerns.
Transportation considerations: Not meeting at Latin: Students may have the option to meet faculty leaders or be dismissed from a location other than Latin (Studio at 2017 W. Division St. Chicago, IL 60622)
