Objective
To explore the rich cultural heritage of the Latinx community throughout the city of Chicago.
Description
Did you know that Chicago is home to the country’s only museum dedicated entirely to Puerto Rican arts and culture, one of the country’s largest Mexican-American literary festivals, an all-female mariachi group, and nearly 20 Michelin-starred Latin American restaurants? With one-third of the city’s residents identifying as Latinx, it is no surprise that Chicago is also home to a vibrant, diverse Latinx community.
Throughout the week we will be delving into various facets of Chicago’s Latinx community through first-hand accounts of growing up in the city, exploring some historically Latinx neighborhoods, sampling a range of cuisines, encountering and discussing public art in Pilsen during walking tours, touring museums like the National Museum of Mexican Art and the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture. Additionally, there will be various hands-on opportunities throughout the week to create art and explore the diversity of the Latinx community of Chicago. This project is open to anyone who wishes to explore Chicago’s rich and diverse Latinx community.
