Objective
Students will get the opportunity to focus for a full week on mindfulness, fitness, and wellness. We will learn about tools for combating anxiety and stress through a variety of exercises and activities. There will also be a focus on movement, exercise, nutrition, sleep and meditation.
Description
After listening to the presentation from Lynn Lyons regarding anxiety in adolescents, we thought it would be a great idea to dedicate a Project Week where students can learn and participate in coping strategies for anxiety and stress. Each day students will begin with a different type of meditation followed by a type of mindful exercise (yoga, strength training, boxing, etc.). We will be partnering with and activities will be led by Gideon Akande, national winner of the Men's Health Next Top Trainer competition and wellness guru. Students will also participate in nutrition classes where they will learn about the benefits of a healthy diet and how it impacts your well-being. They will have the opportunity to meet with a nutritionist and create a nutrition plan that works best for them. Each afternoon, we will explore a variety of hands-on activities such as journaling, painting, mindful walks and goal setting. The overall goal for our week together is to create a toolbox of strategies so that students can find what works best for them and be comfortable with using these techniques when needed. Students will complete a capstone project at the end of the week where they will participate in a community engagement activity.
Student Requirements and Expectations
All students are expected to fully participate in each activity throughout the week. Students must be physically able to engage in fitness activities.
About the Faculty
Ms. Resendiz is a Spanish teacher and has taught at Latin for ten years. She’s led many in-town and international trips including trips to Spain and Guanajuato, Mexico. In addition to projects, Ms. Leticia was a fitness trainer for Fit4MOM.
Mr. McArthur started at Latin the same year as Ms. Resendiz. With a young toddler, Mr. McArthur is excited to learn strategies to help him ease stress and sleep better! Back in college, Mr. McArthur took yoga for a month-long class which included learning about the history of meditation practices, and he hopes that this project week will be a catalyst for re-incorporating mindfulness and fitness into his life.
