Year 5

As part of Year 5's central idea this term - Finding resolution to conflicts between people may lead to a better quality of human life, we have been looking at different conflicts throughout the ages.  We visited Dover castle at the beginning of the term to learn about the conflict between King Henry II and Thomas Beckett, the Archbishop of Canterbury, who was brutally murdered. We planned and wrote a double page recount on our day's events and created  'Van Gogh' style pictures of the castle using glue and pastels.

To celebrate the King's coronation, we created our own family coats of arms, made collages of the kings head, took part in the 'Carriage challenge', where the children worked in groups to recreate  the royal carriage using an egg box and other materials provided. We then finished the afternoon attending the Langley Park picnic to eat the 'chocolate scones' we had baked that week, sang our coronation song 'The Climb' and took part in the sporting activities.

We finally finished our module looking at the events of WW1.  We explored how 'The Great war' started, which alliances were made between the different countries and what life was like in the trenches.  After a morning of role play, the children learnt the hardships of trench life and used that insight to write letters home to loved ones.
