Year 2

Plants rely on their environment to survive

1. An inquiry into what plants need to survive.

2. An inquiry into why plants survive in different climates and environments.

We have had an extremely busy term in Year 2 with our Secret Agent Training and Kings Coronation.

An Inquiry into what plants need to survive

During this inquiry, we have learnt about parts of a plant and how these parts function in order to help plants survive. We did some anatomical drawings after we dissected seeds and bulbs and learnt about the difference.

We conducted a geographical survey of the plants within the school grounds and used our research skills to try and identify them.  We also learnt about evergreen and deciduous trees.

In writing we wrote our own version of 'Jim and the Beanstalk' and came up with our own ways to help the giant.

We then used this as inspiration for planting our own beans. We discussed what plants need to survive using our knowledge and debated which was the most important to survive. We then each planted a bean and removed a variable to see whether a plant could survive without one of them; water, soil, light and temperature.

An Inquiry into why plants survive in different climates.

During this inquiry we learnt about different climates in the world. We identified cold, warm and hot places on a world map and studied plants that can survive in those conditions. We have looked at plants that can survive in hot and cold places and how they have adapted to survive in these places. We learnt about how Cacti can survive in a desert and how Arctic Poppies are the only poppy that live in cold conditions.

We wrote an information text using the knowledge we have researched.

Reading

These are the books we have used this term across our inquiry and reading sessions. We have been focusing on developing our reading stamina and fluency and being able to answer a range of retrieval and inference questions.

We also had a great time at our coronation celebration. We made Apple scones that we ate on the field. We wrote a poem on what might be in a King's poem. We played lots of games on the field wearing the crowns we had made.
