Year 4

This term in Year 4 has been about exploring life in the Anglo-Saxon period. With our central idea being 'Perspectives Develop Through Time'  we have been able to compare the modern day with the Anglo-Saxons, learning about Alfred the Great and writing a newspaper report on the Battle of Edington. We experienced an amazing drama workshop where the children wrote and performed their own plays.

Throughout this journey, we explored significant historical events, individuals, and societies, aiming to understand the diverse perspectives that shaped their worldviews. We analysed primary and secondary sources, such as documents, artifacts, and personal accounts, to gain insights into different historical periods and the people who lived during those times.

In our PSHE lessons, we focused on developing empathy and understanding, recognizing that perspectives are influenced by personal experiences, cultural backgrounds, and societal norms. We engaged in discussions and activities that encouraged open-mindedness and respect for differing viewpoints.

The geography component of our journey provided an additional layer of understanding, as we explored how physical and environmental factors can shape perspectives. We studied how different regions and landscapes can influence the ways in which people view the world and interact with it.

As we progressed through the inquiry learning journey, we continually reflected on our own perspectives and how they have been shaped by the past. We developed critical thinking skills, challenging our assumptions and biases, and gained a deeper appreciation for the complexity of historical events and societal dynamics.

The final line of inquiry has been 'an inquiry into the connections of a local and wider community', in which we focused on comparing Maidstone with India. The children enjoyed understanding the cultural differences, such as school and worhsip, producing a non-chronological report. This was developed onto landscapes, in which the children produced beautiful artwork using our skills of perspective and scale.

Overall, this inquiry learning journey broadened our horizons, fostering a greater appreciation for diverse perspectives and promoting a more inclusive and empathetic approach to understanding the world around us. It empowered us to recognize the importance of considering different viewpoints, both in the past and in our present lives, ultimately preparing us to be thoughtful and informed global citizens.
