Year 5

This term, Year 5 pupils inquired into the ecosystems and biomes across the world. We then watched the trailer for Avatar and discussed how the narrator made it sound realistic. We used our knowledge of biomes and adaptations to consider new animals that could possibly live there.

We then discussed why humans are fascinated by space and what could be out there. We discussed that in fact we haven’t been further than the moon but have sent out probes. We inquired into the planets in the solar system, created cam operated moving planets and inquired into the history of the space race.

Last Thursday, we visited the Royal Observatory in Greenwich and participated in workshops around the birth of the solar system, how and why sundials were created, how they worked and made a model. We also went to the planetarium to explore the solar system. A fantastic time was had by all and we were so proud of their participation, knowledge and conduct on our visit. They received lots of compliments.

We have inquired into famous people such as Mae Jemison, Dorothy Vaughan and Helen Sharman and their contributions and how humans have created a layer of debris that orbits the planet. We have considered how developing technology for inventions in space sometimes uses biomimicry. We have then considered which everyday items we use now that directly came as a result of space technology developments.

We have also had visits from an athlete who oversaw our sponsored exercise. Thank you for all the sponsorships.

Next term, our Central Idea is 'Movement Affects Diversity'. Our first task will be around investigating changes in diet over time. We would really appreciate you saving the following items (in labelled envelopes if possible) to be brought in for the first day back after Christmas: apple seeds, melon seeds, olive stones, orange/lemon seeds, date stones, cherry stones and plum stones. If you have any of those items over Christmas, please remember us!

It has been a very busy term, thank you to everyone for your support.
