Year 1

What a busy term it has been!

Maths Through Inquiry

Central idea: Shapes can be found all around us.

Line of inquiry:

An inquiry into 2-D shapes.

An inquiry into 3-D shapes.

An inquiry into how 2-D and 3-D shapes are connected.

The children explored 2-D and 3-D shapes in the environment. They made links with everyday objects!

Reading Rainbows

Here are the texts that have supported our inquiry this term. Katie's adventures were a great success!

Central idea: Communities in the UK are linked in different ways.

Lines of inquiry:

  1. An inquiry into how the UK is organised.

  1. An inquiry into the characteristics of different cities within the UK.

  1. An inquiry into what makes a community unique.

Research Skills

The children developed their research skill by looking at the features of a map. They then considered how they wanted to design their own mini community. They used all of their knowledge and understanding from all of the lines of inquiry to make a unique community. Once they had created a plan, they then used their design skills to make their communities.

The children used their knowledge of 3D shapes to make the different buildings out of clay. This was messy!

Phonics Skills

Phonics has remained at the heart of our reading and writing skills. The children have been developing their fluency through saying the sounds to read the words, as well as recognising common exception words, through read from sight.
