In Year 5 this term, our Central idea for this module was 'Our rights and responsibilities connect, help and protect people'.
To begin with, we looked at the difference between rights and responsibilities and explored the relationship between the two. We compared King Richard the lion heart with King John and gathered information on each of these monarchs to understand opinions on their characters and how these were formed. We learnt about the 'Magna Carta' and how it influences our laws today.
We looked at 'crime and punishment' through history, starting with the Greeks and then moved on to the Romans. With the information we gathered , we created a double page spread. Time was then given to research 'crime and punishment' in either 'Tudor', Medieval, and Victorian times. In groups, we used our knowledge to write, film and edit a news report on our chosen period.
The children recognised that not everyone is given the rights set out by the UN and this includes homeless people who don't have the right to shelter and enough food. As part of our responsibility to help and protect others, we decided to raise money and hold a Halloween treat stall, where we made and sold toffee and chocolate apples, biscuits, sweets and dragons. We raised £523.60 all together.
It was Year 5's turn to hold an assembly this term - Our theme was 'Harvest'. We spoke about thanks giving to the farmers and demonstrated that humans reap what they sow including kindness and honesty. We demonstrated a food alphabet, listing all the foods beginning with each letter and we looked at ways we can look after our planet, giving tips on things we could do to help personally. We then finished by thinking about those that are less fortunate than us.
