To start off our learning this term we were looking at what a farm is and the three different types of farming. The children explored each type of farming and in our geography lessons they explored the best places and environment for each type of farming. We also looked at how produce from farms goes from 'farm to plate' looking at the journey different food takes.
In our science lessons we investigated rocks and soils, looking at the different properties and how this might affect farming and food production.
Lastly, in our D.T learning we made our very own locally sourced crumble, using blackberries grown in a local farm in Maidstone. We carried out our research first on two different local farms - Clockhouse Farm and Loddington Farm - and learned what locally sourced means. We had a lot of fun making our crumbles.
We started off this line of inquiry by going on a trip to Kent Life. The children had an absolutely brilliant time, participating in a range of Stone Age workshops and were a credit to the staff and school. During their visit, the children got to see what life was like during the Stone Age and were able to get an insight into farming during this period of time. We got to meet a Stone Age member, explore different weapons used, grind our own flour and create our own cave art.
The children really enjoyed our history lessons for this line of inquiry. We did a lot of comparing between life during the Stone Age and life now in modern day. We explored travel, farming and art making a wide range of comparisons. During this time the children learnt how farming developed in the Stone Age and why.
For this final line of inquiry we continued using our history knowledge to explore the spiritual beliefs of the Stone Age people. We also looked at the tools they used at different periods in the Stone Age and thought about how and why they used these tools.
We explored the uses of rocks during the Stone Age period and looked at how we use rocks now. We explored Stone Age settlements and linked this into our geography learning thinking about what materials they were made from and whether they were human or physical features.
Lastly, in our computing lessons we started exploring editing. The children each created a small video pretending they lived in the Stone Age and spoke about their life. They then took these videos onto a website and made small edits, such as adding text, backgrounds and transitions.
On behalf of the Year 3 team, we would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The children have had an absolutely brilliant term and worked really hard.
We are very proud of them and look forward to seeing them, and you, in the new year!
