Line of inquiry 1: An inquiry into the Earth's finite and infinite resources.
We started our learning off this module with a brilliant trip to Wingham Wildlife where we participated in a rainforest workshop, learning about the different layers of the rainforest and the animals we would find. We then went around and explored all the different animals in the park .
We then started our first line of inquiry where we used the lens of geography to explore different finite and infinite resources available to us. We used our map skills to mark down where we would the different resources and did some exploration of fossil fuels. In our writing we wrote a non-chronological report on finite and infinite resources.
Line of inquiry 2: An inquiry into the impact of people's choices on the environment.
For our second line of inquiry we used the subject drivers of science and D.T to start on more focused learning on rainforests and deforestation. Using the lens of science we explored plants, thinking about their lifecycle, what they need in order to grow and how water transports through a plant. We carried out a science investigation where we placed seeds in different areas of our classroom to see how they grow; windowsill, cupboard, under cover and in water with no soil.
Through out D.T lens, we had a go at sewing! We chose a rainforest animal and used the running stitch to attach it onto a piece of square felt.
We also looked at deforestation, exploring why it happens and the impact this has. We used our writing skills to write a persuasive letter to Mr Jones who supported deforestation! We used the persuasive techniques of emotive language and rhetorical questions to help us!
Line of inquiry 3: An inquiry into the balance between meeting human needs and limited resources.
For our final line of inquiry we carried out some fieldwork around our school to explore how much litter we have around. We made a tally of the different litter we found, drawing a map of the school car park and marking where we found the most litter.
We also explored different types of pollution, looking at the impacts they can have on the environment. Lastly we looked at zoos and the role they play in protecting finite resources, linking it to a local zoo to us; Howletts zoo.
The children have had another brilliant term. Their hard work, communication and knowledge has really shone and we are very proud of them!
Next term in our D.T learning we will be making a structure to survive a natural disaster. Over the easter break we kindly ask if you happen to have any thick cardboard around (see picture), please could you save it and send it in with your child after the easter break. Thank you and have a wonderful break.
