Line of Inquiry 1: An Inquiry into What Plants Need to Survive
In our first line of inquiry, we built on our knowledge of plants from Year 1. Firstly, we looked at what 'survival' means and needed to understand what a plant needs to grow. The children were also communicators when we looked at the different parts of a plant and tree and dissected flowers and seeds.
Using this knowledge, we wrote our own non-chronological reports about plants.
Line of Inquiry 2: An Inquiry into Why Plants Survive in Different Climates and Environments
In our second line of inquiry, pupils researched three different countries (Greenland, Australia and the UK) to find out the different types of plants which grow there. The children researched the names of the plants and how plants adapt to the conditions in which they grow.
In classes, we also read 'Jim and the Beanstalk' and created our own stories based on the book. We changed the name of the character and the setting.
Line of Inquiry 3: An Inquiry into How We Can Protect These Environments to Ensure Plants Can Thrive
In our final line of inquiry, the children looked at what the word 'protect' means. They looked at activities we may do and decided whether it was good or bad for the environment.
Using this knowledge, we surveyed our field and outside areas around the academy and we discussed what we would like to do to change it to make it better.
Maths - Measurement: Capacity, Mass and Length
Year 2 pupils enjoyed the practical learning of measurement. They made connections between counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s when reading scales. The children learnt how these skills can be used in everyday life.
Art - Printing
Year 2 pupils explored the artist Arlene Bandes. Arlene created artwork about a range of things: Jerusalem, Landscapes, Nature Prints, Flowers, Family History, Creatures, Figures, Shells and Spirals, Tree Motifs, Abstracts and Birds.
The children learnt how to print and collage focusing on plants.
PE - Cricket
We welcomed Adrian into the academy to demonstrate how to play quick cricket. The children enjoyed learning about this team sport and we were excited to play cricket on their trip to Mote Park.
History - Farming Has Changed Over Time
The children researched how farming has changed over the years and were surprised by how hard it would have been to be a farmer in the past.
RE - How Do We Celebrate Special and Sacred Times?
The children researched celebrations and sacred times for Christians, Muslims and Jewish people. They realised that there are some common themes within the different celebrations.
PSHE - Keeping Ourselves Safe
Year 2 children put their knowledge of keeping safe into practice when they went on the trip to Mote Park. The children showed how to keep safe in an open public space, crossing the road and water safety.
Our fantastic trip to Mote Park!
