There are two levels of distinction students can earn as they demonstrate competencies in three areas. The Missouri Seal of Biliteracy is for students who exhibit a high degree of proficiency in all areas of biliteracy, while the Distinguished Seal of Biliteracy is for students who demonstrate an exceptional degree of proficiency in all areas of biliteracy.
During their sophomore year, students will take the English II End of Course Exam (EOC).
Students will need to earn a proficient or advanced and will qualify for either the Missouri or Distinguished Seal of Biliteracy.
An alternative assessment to demonstrate English proficiency is the ACT.
Students who earn an 18 on the Reading Section, satisfy the requirement for English proficiency for the Missouri Seal of Biliteracy.
Students who earn a 21 on the Reading Section, satisfy the requirement for English proficiency of the Distinguished Seal of Biliteracy.
Students will take the STAMP4S (Standards-based Measurement of Proficiency) exam to test their proficiency in a language other than English. The exam tests students in the four language domains of reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
To earn the Missouri Seal of Biliteracy, students must a score of Intermediate Mid (score of 5) in all domains.
To earn the Distinguished Seal of Biliteracy, students must score of Advanced Low (score of 7) in all domains.
Students must submit an essay demonstration a high level of sociocultural understanding relating to English and a language other than English. The essay topic is focused on one or both of the following questions.
Describe ways in which your language skills have helped you connect to and improve your local and global community.
Describe how your language skills can help you continue to connect with and improve your local and global community in the future.
Students must receive an average of 3 on all criteria of the Scoring Rubric as judged by a committee of four teachers and district personnel. The essay must be submitted by March 1.
