Delaney plans on attending Black Hills State University in South Dakota to major in Outdoor Education. When asked about advice for students studying for the Seal of Biliteracy, she joked, "Do your pushups." Last year a student did pushups during the three plus hour exam and successfully passed, so it has become a Kearney tradition.Â
She also suggests that students sitting for the exam should worry less about what they don't know and to use what they do know to convey the meaning. "Don't worry about the word you don't know, work around that word." She strongly recommends music and using the lyrics to help with sentence structure and words choice.
Her favorite memories of German class includes glitter messes, the shocking ending to Sophie Scholl, getting to go on the field trip they waited three very long years for, and finally the day she realized she could comprehend a poster in the classroom she passed by every day. "That was the moment I knew German."
Biliteracy means being able to watch World War II movies, understanding videos and music lyrics. Delaney said, "Being biliterate is so humbling, then you open a book in German and realize you have some work to do."
When asked if she had anything else to add, she explained why she felt so accomplished earning the Seal of Biliteracy, because "After two years you don't really know if you love [the language] or not," but she has enjoyed the journey. And she added, "Do your Duolingo" as her last bit of advice.
