Cambridge IGCSE Malay Foreign Language is designed for learners who are learning Malay as a foreign language. The aim is to develop an ability to use the language effectively for practical communication.
The course is based on the linked language skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing, and these are built on as learners progress through their studies.
The syllabus also aims to offer insights into the culture and the society of countries and communities where Malay language is spoken thus encouraging positive attitudes towards language learning and speakers of foreign language.
Candidates will be required to show knowledge and understanding of the topic areas given.
These provide contexts for the acquisition of vocabulary and the study of grammar and structures. Through the study of these topic areas, candidates gain an insight into target language countries and communities. In the Speaking examination, candidates also have the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of a topic of their own choice which might be outside the list below.

Cambridge IGCSE Malay Foreign Language comprises of four papers:
P1 : Listening - Candidates will listen to a number of recordings and answer multiple -choice and matching questions.
P2: Reading and Directed Writing - Candidates should be able to show comprehension of a wide range of texts and carry out writing tasks in response to a stimulus.
P3 : Speaking - Candidates demonstrate that they can participate in a discussion, respond to unprepared questions in a conversation.
P4 : Continuous Writing - Candidates demonstrate use of vocabulary, syntax and grammar, punctuation and spelling in extended prose.
IGCSE Malay Language is compulsory for Malaysian Nationals. Proficiency in Bahasa Malaysia is important and a requirement for some careers and further studies in Malaysia.
***Malay Foreign Language is compulsory for all Malaysian candidates who have not completed the course at the end of Year 9.
***Students who have not completed Malay Foreign Language at the end of Year 9 will sit their exam at the end of Year 11 either they can enrol for Malay First Language or Malay Foreign Language.
