You will be studying the subjects that you choose for two years (Years 10 & 11 or Years 12 & 13). It is a good idea to choose subjects that interest you and that you think you will enjoy, making you more likely to succeed. Think about the subject - do not choose a subject because you like the teacher or because your friend wants to do it, but choose what is best for you. Some subjects could have a large amount of coursework to complete as part of the course or others may have essays that have to be written.
Consider how you learn best.
Think about how you are doing in different subjects. Your teachers can give you feedback about your performance in class and the grade you are currently working at.
Think about subjects that go well together and have skills you might be able to transfer.
You might want to study a variety of subjects and keep your options open for future study.
If you are thinking about going on to university, have a look at the kinds of subjects they look for in candidates for a particular course you might have an interest in.
Consider how many of the subjects you have chosen have coursework elements - will this put you under a lot of pressure during the year to complete the necessary work?
Choosing your options is a flexible process. The choices process has an extended period of time for you to research and receive advice and guidance from your teachers and parents and a guidance meeting with a member of the Secondary and Sixth Form Leadership Team.
At IGCSE, the secondary timetable is designed using a blocking system. Students will select their 1 option choice per block. We encourage students to choose a balance and varied selection of subjects, and some subjects such as Additional Mathematics and Triple Science require approval from the Mathematics and Science Departments.
Some combinations of subjects cannot be studied, eg. Accounting, Business and Economics or Art & Design, Design Technology and Food Technology - these combinations would have too much overlap in content, knowledge and skills.
At A-Levels, the final offer to many of the subjects chosen would depend on the the student meeting the minimum grade for a certain subject at IGCSE. Subject combinations would be discussed in one-on-one consultations with our Academic coaches.
