The Cambridge IGCSE in Drama aims to:
Develop candidates understanding of drama through practical and theoretical work.
Understand the role of actor, director and designer creating a piece of theatre.
Develop candidates acting skills, both individually and in groups.
Enable candidates to develop skills in devising drama.
Communicate feelings and ideas to the audience.
Foster understanding of the performance process and enable candidates to evaluate the various stages of that process.
Encourage the enjoyment of drama.
Cambridge IGCSE Drama encourages learners to be:
Confident, developing practical skills to deliver dramatic performance for an audience
Responsible, developing shared responsibility working with others and understanding the power of drama to engage, influence and persuade
Reflective, engaging with performance processes, and using them to inform future practice
Innovative, creating original dramatic work and formulating imaginative responses to existing repertoire

Candidates will study:
the elements of practical drama
how to work with extracts from published plays as an actor, director and designer
how to devise, develop and structure their own original dramatic material from stimuli such as short titles, poems, pictures, songs, historical events and stories
how to evaluate their contribution to the devising process and the success of the final piece
how to use staging and design as part of a dramatic performance
individual and group performance skills and how they are applied to create character and communicate meaning to an audience
COMPONENT 1: Exam Paper 40%
The questions on this paper relate to the pre-release material which is sent to Centres in advance of the
examination. This material consists of 3 stimuli and an extended extract from a play (or an abridged version of
an entire play). Candidates devise a piece of drama based on one of the three stimuli and study the extract from
the play.
Paper 1: (2 hours 30 minutes)
Written Examination= 40%
80 marks in total
Candidates answer
All questions in Section A
two questions in Section B (one compulsory question and one question from a choice of two)
both questions in Section C.
*Mock exams are Internally Assessed and Final Exams are Externally assessed.
COMPONENT 2: Practical Coursework 60%
120 marks in total
Candidates must submit:
• One individual performance (monologue) based on an extract from a play.
• One group performance based on an extract from a scripted play.
• One group performance based on an original devised piece.
These are internally assessed and moderated and then sent to Cambridge to be externally moderated.
Students who study IGCSE Drama are viewed as innovative, confident and successful people who can rise to any challenge and are highly sought after for jobs ranging from a career path in the industry like Actor or Theatre Director to a career in Public Relations work or even Nursing and Law.
Opting for Drama IGCSE provides you with a good progression route to more advanced qualifications including BTEC L3 Acting or Performing Arts; A Level Drama; A Level Theatre Studies or A Level Performing Arts. Beyond KS5 you can then study at Degree level any Drama related subject like BA (Hons) Drama, BA (Hons) Drama and English or BA (Hons) Drama: Theatre Film and Television.
It is worth noting that Drama is not considered a ‘soft subject’ by the Russell Group Universities!
Cambridge IGCSE is recognised by leading universities and employers worldwide, and is an international passport to progression and success. It provides a solid foundation for moving on to higher level studies.
Candidates who are awarded grades C to A* in Cambridge IGCSE Drama are well prepared to follow courses leading to AS and A Level Drama, or the equivalent.
Students will have developed the skills to enable them to progress into fields like Radio, Television, Theatre, Media related fields, politics, law, marketing and publicity agencies, These skills are also transferable and can be easily applied to events management, sales, script & screenwriting.
