It's time to break out of our professional boxes and take the message and methods of English learner advocacy to all educators and stakeholders in a school.
Math coaches use a "before" and "after" scenario to show how a 4th grade math teacher added visuals, language supports, and partner work to make math more accessible for English learners and all learners.
Educators who refused to assume a deficit mindset were instrumental in uplifting an English learner and her family. Now, an educator herself, she describes why change must come from within the classroom.
Fluent writers apply nuance to words and syntax that can be difficult to comprehend in a new language. Mentor texts in students' home languages can build a bridge that supports skillful writing in a new language.
