Great week everyone! Thank you for doing your best during MAP testing. Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week at KISJ and I want to encourage you to take a minute to write a short thank you note to each of your teachers. Teaching is a demanding job, but our teachers work hard everyday because they love you and want good things for you. The few minutes you take to share what you love most about them will make their week!
MS DRAGONS,
May is a month to show appreciation and kindness towards the people we know. May has Children’s Day, Parent’s Day, and Teacher’s Day. Make sure to take some time this month to BE KIND!
Library Dates to be Aware: As we are getting closer to the end of the school year, that means things need to get returned to the library. May 10 will be the last day to borrow books and May 24 is the day that ALL BOOKS MUST BE RETURNED!!! See the more specific details in the Library section of this Student Weekly
Creepy Crawlers: Please remember to shake your hoodies and brush your school bags off if you leave them on the ground. This is the time of year when we see some creepy crawlers coming out to enjoy the nice weather. We want to do our best to prevent any scary surprises.
Connecting Language: Though I continue to meet with students regarding the connecting language at school, it has been reported that things are improving. We are hearing a lot more English in the hallways and in the classroom. This is good to hear. Students need to make a continued effort to follow this policy. It helps keep the school safer AND it helps your English abilities. It is well proven that the best way to improve your language acquisition is to use it in social settings.
Teacher Appreciation Week: This coming week is Teacher Appreciation Week. This is a great opportunity to let your teachers know, that even though they may not be your “favorite” people, you appreciate what they do for you and how much they do care about your wellbeing and academic achievement.
This is a big week for you Grade 6 students! On Tuesday, we are leaving for our field trip to the city of Gyeongju. Please keep a few things in mind:
Check the Class of 2030 Google Classroom for important information about the trip
Ask your advisor if you have any questions
Prepare yourself for a great experience, but remember that you will need to be on your best behavior
This week we will talk about thinking about others' needs when making decisions and how our decisions impact others and how the different decisions we make can have different outcomes. On Tuesday we welcome the JOE to talk to us about traffic safety, it’s important to be mindful when cars are around us.
Make sure you have dress shoes and a jacket/blazer for the promotion ceremony. They are both required for the ceremony. Examples of dress shoes have been posted on Classroom. Keep making good choices!
DRAGONS STARS! Too often we focus on improving behavior and not necessarily celebrating all the awesome things our students do. Each week, I hear from so many teachers about some pretty cool, kind, and amazing things you do. Here are some of the DRAGONS STARS that shone brightly last week!
We also know there are many acts of awesomeness that sometimes go unseen. Thank you to everyone who is committed to making our community and better, kinder, and safer place for all.
We finally got a Clash of DRAGONS eventlast Friday. The results have been added and the points are getting tighter. The Harabang could be yours!
The standings are up-to-date! Here is the slideshow with name lists, game rules, and the standings. (If your name is missing please contact Mr. Boland right away and let him know.)
Dear Dragons,
This is a friendly reminder that student ambassador applications for next school year will close Monday (May 6th) at 8pm sharp. If you are interested please get your application in before the due date. Responsibility is extremely important when we consider applicants so we will not be accepting any late applications.
Student Ambassadors are a group of students who are dedicated to the positive promotion of the Middle School at KISJ. These students are leaders in our community who will serve as an essential part of our learning environment. You will be expected to help new students with the transition to KISJ as well as participate in select middle school events. However, the most important responsibility of the student ambassadors is to help students at KISJ Middle School feel safe and included.
Becoming a Student Ambassador gives you a chance to grow your leadership and communication skills, and inspire others to take an active role in representing KISJ.
While this is an important role in middle school, it might not be the best fit for all students. It is important that you see this opportunity as something that you should only pursue if you have a genuine interest and enjoy meeting with and talking with new people.
If you have any questions please reach out to Ms. Hallion or Mr. Tipton.
Course Registration Timeline

One of our Grade 11 HS students, Matthew Huh, is offering an awesome opportunity for a select number of our students to experience and explore the world of physics. He has 5 experimental lessons planned for MS students. Space will be limited for this event so once the form opens, it will be on a first-come first-serve basis. Right now, the dates that he has determined for these experimental lessons are: May 21, 22, 28, 29, and June 4. The expectation would be that if you sign up, you will attend these after-school sessions from 4:10 to 5:10pm in Mr. Lee's classroom.
More information on the sign-up form release date will be sent to students in the near future.
Here is a link to an overview of his idea and the 6 lessons he will present.

We had an excellent morning of baseball against some of our GEC schools. Our boys played two matches; one against NLCS and one against SJA. The DRAGONS came away with a 1-1 record and most importantly, and valuable experience of teamwork. Our boys were great and we have more to look forward to.
On May 11 and 12 we are registered to participate in a local mini-tournament with some teams from Seogwipo and Jeju City. Then, we will wrap up our baseball season with a trip to Seoul on May 17 and May 18. We plan on watching a KBO game between the Doosan Bears and Lotte Giants and then playing some friendly matches on Saturday morning before coming back to Jeju on Saturday evening.

The table will be cleared as March has begun.
Make sure to check out the MS Office for items that have been misplaced. This should be one of the first places you look for lost or missing items. We often have an overload of hoodies and PE shirts. Please remember to label your belongings.
At the end of each month, we remove all items.
Wednesday After School: On Wednesdays, we have an early dismissal at 325. Students are expected to head off-campus or back to the dorms. Some students have to stay on campus beyond 330 for late pick-up or an after-school activity. This means we have certain expectations of where students must go from 330 onwards:
Late Pick-ups: Our library is open every day until 5pm. This is where students MUST go if they have to wait after school for the bus or a parent.
After-School Activity - ANY student needing to stay for an after-school activity (sports/drama) MUST got to the ES/MSPAC Attendance will be taken in the PAC. Any student not in the PAC will not be permitted to practice that day.
Dorm students: All dorm students must report back to the dorms. If these students have an ASA, they can return to the day campus at 4pm.
Deli: The deli is not an option for students before 4pm.
Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) - According to the School Dorm and Life Guide, “Day students may bring PEDs to school but they are to remain out of sight throughout the school day. Staff may confiscate PEDs that are visible during the school day.” PEDs should be in your bags and out of sight while on campus. They should NOT be in your pocket or hand unless it is for an academic purpose. Taking your PEDs to the bathroom during classes or break time does not meet our school expectations.
Respect - Remember to make sure that the language you use is respectful. Think about the words you use, they reflect who you are. In classrooms, English is the language we use.
Library at Recess: SmartPass Library Rooms have been added: G6 Lunch & G7/8 Lunch. Students who want to apply to stay in the library during lunch will have to SCHEDULE a SmartPass for one of those rooms towards the end of period 4. The librarians will approve those passes at 11:45 or at the time the student enters so the approved ones may go to the library. Exceeding requests (#31) will be denied and students will get a message. Make Sure to bring ID card. Make Sure to bring your ID card.
Bicycles, Scooters, and Skateboards: Students should not be riding these vehicles on campus. Students should walk these vehicles through the gate. All students should wear helmets as well.
Uniforms - Uniforms must be worn properly. Club shirts, Ambassador shirts, Team jerseys, hats, and Dorm clothing are NOT part of the casual uniform. ALL students should have their KISJ casual shirt on, even if they are wearing a KISJ hoodie. Respect our community by respecting our uniform.
FAQs
If you are wearing your formal uniform, long-sleeved shirts should be tucked in and neckties are worn with the knot at the top of the shirt (not hanging loosely).
Plain white/black shirts purchased in the uniform shop are NOT uniform pieces. They are for wearing under uniform shirts if you choose.
Students are expected to ALWAYS be in uniform when on campus during the school day.
Shoes: The MS and HS have simplified the shoe policy schoolwide. For formal and casual uniform days, “Shoes must be all black and have closed toes and a back that covers the heel: running shoes (sneakers) are permitted.” This includes the logos, laces, and soles on your shoes. If you have to ask, then you probably know the answer. It is awesome to see that most students have had the correct footwear for the first days of school. If you have other colors on your shoe, please make sure to get your new shoes ASAP. If you use Naver or Coupang you can find links to several shoes that meet our requirements. Many shoe stores such as ABC Mart also carry all-black shoes in Nike, Reebok, Sketchers, etc.
Hoods and Hats: Hoods and Hats can be used outside for weather protection. Once you enter indoors (classroom, hallway, stairwell, cafeteria, lobby, etc.) all hats and hoods should be removed.
Responsible Use Policy (RUP) - It is important to review our Responsible Use Policy. During the school day, we should be using our Macbooks for academic purposes, only. Students should not be shopping, gaming, or visiting non-academic websites during the school day.
Locker Issues: Please please follow these steps if you have any problem with your locker. First, try to solve the problem yourself. Second, ask your advisor for support. Third, complete this form.
Playground Expectations: The MS has access to the playground area during lunch recess on Tuesdays and Fridays. Do not climb on the outside of slides, and make sure you do not hang upside-down on the monkey bars. The monkey bars are for swinging with hands only.
Stairwells - We need to be mindful of our behavior in the stairwells, especially during passing times and at lunchtime.
We do not want too many students trying to squeeze up the stairs. This leads to pushing, and that leads to accidents and injuries. It is also not practicing social distancing. Students really should be walking up and down the stairs, no more than two at a time, and keeping to the right.
The volume level should be low. There is always another grade or two that are in classes. As you move about the building you need to "turn off your outdoor voices.
Please continue to follow our uniform policy. Students are expected to be in the proper uniform at all times and to wear their uniforms properly. Non-uniform clothing should not be worn on campus during the school day.
