Dear DRAGONS
This coming week is Spirit Week. Please make sure that you participate as best as you can.
Also, we are in the last month of school. Please do your best to make good choices and let’s finish this year on a positive note!
MS DRAGONS,
Spirit Week is a fun time for everyone to be a little more relaxed. Please continue to make respectful and responsible decisions. Errors in judgment now can lead to consequences that make the end of the year less enjoyable. Be Awesome!!!
Library Sign-ups: We have noticed an increase in the number of students going to the library at lunch/recess time. With the weather warming up, this is the time of year when students should be going outside and giving their bodies an “outdoor” break. With so many students trying to get in the library, our Smartpass system is not working in its intended way, THEREFORE, we will be going back to have students sign-up using the Google Forms below. The forms will open at 8am each morning and close at 1130, or as soon as the library hits capacity. Students who sign up for the library are expected to be there.
Safety Reminders: Following up on the Traffic Safety assembly last week by the Jeju Office of Education, it is important for students to take proper safety precautions while on the roads in the area. Whether you live in the GEC, Shinhwa, Jeju City, Seogwipo City, or over the summer when you may head to the mainland or abroad
Always wear a helmet when riding a vehicle with wheels (bikes, scooters, skateboards)
STOP and look both ways when crossing the street
Use crosswalks and obey street signs
Travel at safe speeds
Be lit up or where bright/reflective clothing when traveling at night
Inappropriate touching: We have had several incidents in the last week where students have been touching or flicking their friends in the groin or buttocks. Though this may be fun in your friendship group (I am not sure why), it is dangerous and extremely inappropriate. We have zero tolerance for students touching others in areas that are covered by bathing suits. KEEP YOUR HANDS TO YOURSELF!
Moving Safely in Crowds: This has been spoken about several times this year, but as a reminder, when you are in crowded spaces, you need to move in an orderly fashion and with the flow of traffic. Pushing or running can be dangerous to the individual and the group. It is ok to stop and pause for a few sections to let others go first (sometimes it is even polite to do so!). At school, these crowded zones tend to be entering and exiting the cafeteria, the stairwells, and the G6/G7 locker hallway.
Connecting Language: It is the responsibility of all students to politely remind their friends to use the connecting language at school. If you are in a group that is not using the connecting language, you are responsible for the group's actions.
We had a great trip to Gyeongju last week! Overall, the Grade 6 teachers were impressed with the level of responsibility that you demonstrated on our trip. Keep up the good work! This week we will return to our normal schedule. It is a great opportunity to refocus yourself and finish off the school year strong!
This week in advisory we will be focusing on understanding other social and cultural groups. It’s also Spirit Week, so be sure to participate in this community activity.
Finals are coming in a week! Be in class and ask questions when you don’t understand something. If you are absent and miss out on things, then make sure you check in with your teacher to see what you need to do to make up the learning. Not much longer!
DRAGONS STARS! Too often we focus on improving behavior and not necessarily celebrating all the awesome things our students do. Each week, I hear from so many teachers about some pretty cool, kind, and amazing things you do. Here are some of the DRAGONS STARS that shone brightly last week!
We also know there are many acts of awesomeness that sometimes go unseen. Thank you to everyone who is committed to making our community and better, kinder, and safer place for all.
We are planning our next Clash of DRAGONS event and gearing up for the big finale on June 3.
The Harabang could be yours!
The standings are up-to-date! Here is the slideshow with name lists, game rules, and the standings. (If your name is missing please contact Mr. Boland right away and let him know.)
We had over 100 students apply to the ambassador for next school year! Thank you so much to everyone who applied. We are currently going through all the applications and all students who applied will receive an email on May 21st with the outcome of their application.
Current Student Ambassadors
The end of year student ambassador party will be held on Friday, May 31st at recess and lunch time. We will be having a pizza lunch celebration to end the school year.
This year is the first year where we will have several student ambassadors who have been with the program for all 3 years of middle school!! We are so proud of all the students who have been a part of the student ambassador program this year and have been helping new students, helping out at after school events and being kind members of the middle school community.
One of our Grade 11 HS students, Matthew Huh, is offering an awesome opportunity for a select number of our students to experience and explore the world of physics. He has 5 experimental lessons planned for MS students. Space will be limited for this event so once the form opens, it will be on a first-come first-serve basis. Right now, the dates that he has determined for these experimental lessons are: May 21, 22, 28, 29, and June 4. The expectation would be that if you sign up, you will attend these after-school sessions from 4:10 to 5:10pm in Mr. Lee's classroom.
Here is the form to sign-up to attend the Phyics-Mania classes. This form will open on Monday, May 13 at 4:05pm. Remember, space is limited and it is a first come first serve basis.
Here is a link to an overview of his idea and the 6 lessons he will present.

Additionally, please find a link to the list of students participating in the competition:
If you have any questions or need further clarification on any of the problems, please don't hesitate to ask a Math teacher.
Best of luck in your preparation! We look forward to seeing how well everyone performs.
Warm regards,
Math Team
Congratulations to all our musical performers in the MS Choir and the MS Orchestra. Your performance last week was outstanding. This was an amazing performance and a great event to help us say farewell to Ms. Hingstman and Mr. Vest as this was their final concert as members of the KISJ family! Once a DRAGON, always a Dragon!
Grade 7 Visual Art Students are currently exhibiting their paintings intthe MS entrance foye.
Grade 7 students have created a painting on canvas, expressing their personal interests and ideas, while referring to their study of artists and styles including Optical Illusions, Pop Art and many personal artists of interest. The resulting exhibition has resulted in a collection of very unique paintings representing the wonderfully unique individuals that are the Grade 7 students of 2024.
We had an excellent morning of baseball against some of our GEC schools. Our boys played two matches; one against NLCS and one against SJA. The DRAGONS came away with a 1-1 record and most importantly, and valuable experience of teamwork. Our boys were great and we have more to look forward to.
On May 11 and 12 we are registered to participate in a local mini-tournament with some teams from Seogwipo and Jeju City. Then, we will wrap up our baseball season with a trip to Seoul on May 17 and May 18. We plan on watching a KBO game between the Doosan Bears and Lotte Giants and then playing some friendly matches on Saturday morning before coming back to Jeju on Saturday evening.
Interested in the martial arts?
Library at Recess: We are going back to the old survey for lunch recess. Please complete the proper grade-level form. If you really want to come to the library for a quiet reading time, please make sure to sign up early. When space is filled, the signup form will be closed.

This is for everyone - students, teachers and staff.
If you have OVERDUE BOOKS, please bring them back to the library. If you are having trouble with your SORA reading or want to connect, We can Help!
There will be a short quiz to help students review this weekly communication. It is important that all students review this newsletter each week, so they are prepared for the week, and to make sure they are INFORMED. Here is Did you read the Student Weekly Quiz #16
Make sure to check out the MS Office for items that have been misplaced. This should be one of the first places you look for lost or missing items. We often have an overload of hoodies and PE shirts. Please remember to label your belongings.
At the end of each month, we remove all items.
Wednesday After School: On Wednesdays, we have an early dismissal at 325. Students are expected to head off-campus or back to the dorms. Some students have to stay on campus beyond 330 for late pick up or an after school activity. This means we have certain expectations of where students must go from 330 onwards:
Late Pick-ups: Our library is open every day until 5pm. This is where students MUST go if they have to wait after school for the bus or a parent.
After School Activity - ANY student needing to stay for an after-school activity (sports/drama) MUST got to the ES/MSPAC Attendance will be taken in the PAC. Any student not in the PAC will not be permitted to practice that day.
Dorm students: All dorm students must report back to the dorms. If these stusend have an ASA, they can return to the day campus at 4pm.
Deli: The deli is not an option for students before 4pm.
Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) - According to the School Dorm and Life Guide, “Day students may bring PEDs to school but they are to remain out of sight throughout the school day. Staff may confiscate PEDs that are visible during the school day.” PEDs should be in your bags and out of sight while on campus. They should NOT be in your pocket or hand unless it is for an academic purpose. Taking your PEDs to the bathroom during classes or break time is not meeting our school expectations.
Respect - Remember to make sure that the language you use is respectful. Think about the words you use, they reflect who you are. In classrooms, English is the language we use.
Library at Recess: Please complete the proper grade-level form. The form will be opened each day at 8:00 am and closed each day at the end of class, right before lunch or earlier if the signups reach 30 students. A maximum of 30 students can sign up. If you really want to come to the library for a quiet reading time, please make sure to sign up early. When space is filled, the signup form will be closed.
Make Sure to bring ID card.
Bicycles, Scooters, and Skateboards: Students should not be riding these vehicles on campus. Students should walk these vehicles through the gate. All students should wear helmets as well.
Uniforms - Uniforms must be worn properly. Club shirts, Ambassador shirts, Team jerseys, hats, and Dorm clothing are NOT part of the casual uniform. ALL students should have their KISJ casual shirt on, even if they are wearing a KISJ hoodie. Respect our community by respecting our uniform.
FAQs
If you are wearing your formal uniform, long sleeve shirts should be tucked in and neckties are worn with the knot at the top of the shirt (not hanging loosely).
Plain white/black shirts purchased in the uniform shop are NOT uniform pieces. They are for wearing under uniform shirts if you choose.
Students are expected to ALWAYS be in uniform when on campus during the school day.
Shoes: The MS and HS have simplified the shoe policy schoolwide. For formal and casual uniform days, “Shoes must be all black and have closed toes and a back that covers the heel: running shoes (sneakers) are permitted.” This includes the logos, laces and soles on your shoes. If you have to ask, then you probably know the answer. It is awesome to see that most students have had the correct footwear for the first days of school. If you have other colors on your shoe, please make sure to get your new shoes ASAP. If you use Naver or Coupang you can find links to several shoes that meet our requirements. Many shoe stores such as ABC Mart also carry all black shoes in Nike, Reebok, Sketchers, etc.
Hoods and Hats: Hoods and Hats can be used outside for weather protection. Once you enter indoors (classroom, hallway, stairwell, cafeteria, lobby, etc.) all hats and hoods should be removed.
Responsible Use Policy (RUP) - It is important to review our Responsible Use Policy. During the school day, we should be using our Macbooks for academic purposes, only. Students should not be shopping, gaming, or visiting non-academic websites during the school day.
Locker Issues: Please please follow these steps if you have any problem with your locker. First, try to solve the problem yourself. Second, ask your advisor for support. Third, complete this form.
Playground Expectations: The MS has access to the playground area during lunch recess on Tuesdays and Fridays. Do not climb on the outside of slides, and make sure you do not hang upside-down on the monkey bars. The monkey bars are for swinging with hands only.
Stairwells - We need to be mindful of our behavior in the stairwells, especially during passing times and at lunchtime.
We do not want too many students trying to squeeze up the stairs. This leads to pushing, and that leads to accidents and injuries. It is also not practicing social distancing. Students really should be walking up and down the stairs, no more than two at a time, and keeping to the right.
The volume level should be low. There is always another grade or two that are in classes. As you move about the building you need to "turn off your outdoor voices.
Please continue to follow our uniform policy. Students are expected to be in the proper uniform at all times and to wear their uniforms properly. Non-uniform clothing should not be worn on campus during the school day.
