Hey there DRAGONS,
I hope you all had an excellent break and you are coming back refreshed and recharged. Let's work hard and finish the first quarter strong!
BUSY! BUSY! BUSY! The next 5 weeks are going to move at a blistering pace (That means they are going to feel VERY fast!) Students need to be organized, attentive, and present in class. Everyone needs to be patient and needs to be supportive of others. Check your calendars and ask your teachers for help.
Formal Uniform: October 2nd and October 16th are formal uniform days in the month of October. Be sure to look your best with long-sleeved shirts tucked in and your ties up to your neck.
Weather Changes: As we transition into autumn weather please make sure you are ready for temperature changes at school. Wear your appropriate uniforms and if you are worried about being cold at school, choose to wear pants, your vest, and your blazer on formal uniform days. Remember the hoodie only goes with the casual uniform. You can still choose to wear your short-sleeved uniform shirts and shorts/skorts if you wish.
Creepy Crawlers: With the temperature drops, bugs are also looking for warm places. If you lay your blazer or hoodie down while outside, shake it before putting it back on. No surprises are a good thing!!!
Social Media Consumption: Middle School students worry a lot about what others think of them. It is how your brains are wired. Social Media continues to add stress to students' lives by making this worry a 24/7 stressor. Haters are going to hate. Don't spend your time worrying about the negative things people say/post. It will consume you. Focus on the good people around you and the family and friends in your life.
Welcome back 6th Graders! We hope that you had a restful and relaxing Chuseok Holiday. The next few weeks are going to be exciting and very busy!
Now that we’re back at school, make sure you are getting the right amount of rest each night (8-10 hours of sleep) and eating healthy food.
Monday, October 2, is a formal uniform day.
In your classes and your advisory, your teachers will be getting you ready for growth portfolios, Fall Festival, student led conferences, and more! Make sure that you ask questions when you are unsure about what is happening or what is expected of you.
Welcome back! We hope your break was relaxing. This week we will be discussing friendship in advisory and focusing on showing compassion.
We have a big week in front of us! Seoul Trip is happening this week! Start packing this weekend so you don’t forget anything. Check the packing list on the G8 Classroom. Begin preparing mentally as well. Your best behavior is required on the trip. Follow the rules and the instructions of your teachers.
GAME ON. The standings have been updated after the Jegi Chagi Competition! Watch for our next Competition on October 27.
Here is the slideshow with name lists, game rules, and the standings. (If your name is missing please contact Mr. Boland right away and let him know.)

Happy Chuseok Break Dragons!
We'd like to address an important topic that revolves around promoting respect, empathy, and inclusivity in KISJ. It concerns the way we use language when referring to people who may have different abilities or appearances. It's crucial to recognize that language has a significant impact on individuals' self-esteem and overall well-being. Please think about the impact your words have on the other person. “Once they are said, they can only be forgiven, but not forgotten…Words can hurt or heal others”.
Avoid Using Offensive Terms:
It is essential to avoid using offensive terms like "disabled" or "fat" when referring to people. It is not ok to use these terms. People with different abilities or body sizes are not targets of discrimination and hurtful attitudes. They may face unique challenges and we need to educate ourselves on how to support them.
Remember that our goal as a community is to create a safe and welcoming environment for everyone. By using respectful and inclusive language, we can foster a sense of belonging and support for all members of our community.
Q1 clubs began on Tuesday, August 15. All students should attend each club session from 330 to 400pm each and every Tuesday and Thursday.
STUCO
A big Thank You to STUCO for all their hard work in making the Falling Out of Green Social a big success! After Chuseok, STUCO will be focusing on planning the Fall Festival. Watch this space for details!
Want to speak to a Grade-level STUCO representative, or do you have some suggestions for us? Check out our Linktree! Shout out to Yujin for creating it!
Service: We are still in the process of trying to coordinate a clothing donation drive and booth for Jeju Angel’s Orphanage at the Fall Festival. We are also planning on collaborating with the ES and HS to work with Jeju Furey/Santa’s Helpers, and would like to donate wrapped gifts to children in need. Have a great break!

Important Message For Athletic Spectators:
All MS students are welcome and encouraged to attend athletic events and support friends and classmates. When you are part of a spectating audience, there are some very important expectations you must follow:
Sportsmanship also applies to fans:
All cheering uses appropriate language (in both Korean and English)
Never mock players on our team AND on the opponent’s team.
Do not argue with the decisions the referees make.
Watch and cheer from a distance:
If you are not part of a team, do not invade their space.
Stay Safe:
Pay attention to your surroundings and be mindful of your safety and the safety of others. Avoid running onto the field or court, and follow any safety guidelines provided by the school our athletes are competing at.
Remember that the primary purpose of spectating is to support your friends and enjoy the game. Keep the experience positive for yourself, your friends, and everyone involved. If you cannot follow these rules, MS students will not be allowed to attend athletic events at KISJ, and other GEC schools will be notified to keep KISJ students out of their campuses during athletic events.

AMIS Orchestra & Band Festival Auditions
Auditions are due before October 23 for either the AMIS MS Orchestra Festival or the AMIS MS Band Festival. You must meet with Mr. Vest or Mr. Chapa to discuss the audition. The Orchestra Festival is held February 21-25 at KISJ and the Band Festival is held April 10-14 at HKIS (Hong Kong). Please contact Mr. Vest or Mr. Chapa if you have any questions.
Students, we hope you had some time to read over Chuseok Break. Remember SORA Books, AudioBooks, and Magazines. Looking at a magazine that interests you and reading an article is a great way to find out about the world outside of KISJ as well as practice your reading skills. There are lots of topics to choose from. See Library for Help. (SORA Link)
Each week for Semester 1, there will be a short Google Form asking questions about our school’s guiding document, The School and Dorm Life Guide. Students are expected to read and understand this document. If you complete the quiz, and get all the questions right, there might be a small reward for you! Here is Quiz # 7.
Make sure to check the MS Office if you have lost anything. We keep things in the office for a month. Unclaimed items will be discarded appropriately.
Wednesday After School: On Wednesdays, we have an early dismissal at 325. Students are expected to head off-campus or back to the dorms. Some students have to stay on campus beyond 330 for late pick-up or an after-school activity. This means we have certain expectations of where students must go from 330 onwards:
Late Pick-ups: Our library is open every day until 5pm. This is where students MUST go if they have to wait after school for the bus or a parent.
After-School Activity - ANY student needing to stay for an after-school activity (sports/drama) MUST go to the ES/MSPAC Attendance will be taken in the PAC. Any student not in the PAC will not be permitted to practice that day.
Dorm students: All dorm students must report back to the dorms. If these students have an ASA, they can return to the day campus at 4pm.
Deli: The deli is not an option for students until after 4pm.
Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) - According to the School Dorm and Life Guide, “Day students may bring PEDs to school but they are to remain out of sight throughout the school day. Staff may confiscate PEDs that are visible during the school day.” PEDs should be in your bags and out of sight while on campus. They should NOT be in your pocket or hand unless it is for an academic purpose. Taking your PEDs to the bathroom during classes or break time does not meet our school expectations.
Respect - Remember to make sure that the language you use is respectful. Think about the words you use, they reflect who you are. In classrooms, English is the language we use.
Library at Recess: Please complete the proper grade-level form should you want to go to the library instead of going out to the MS Field during recess time.
The form will be opened each day at 8:10 am and close each day at the end of class, right before lunch. The form will be located in the Reminders Section of the Student Weekly.
Bicycles, Scooters, and Skateboards: Students should not be riding these vehicles on campus. Students should walk these vehicles through the gate. All students should wear helmets as well.
Uniforms - Uniforms must be worn properly. Club shirts, Ambassador shirts, Team jerseys, hats, and Dorm clothing are NOT part of the casual uniform. ALL students should have their KISJ casual shirt on, even if they are wearing a KISJ hoodie. Respect our community by respecting our uniform.
FAQs
If you are wearing your formal uniform, long sleeve shirts should be tucked in and neckties are worn with the knot at the top of the shirt (not hanging loosely).
Plain white/black shirts purchased in the uniform shop are NOT uniform pieces. They are for wearing under uniform shirts if you choose.
Students are expected to ALWAYS be in uniform when on campus during the school day.
Shoes: The MS and HS have simplified the shoe policy schoolwide. For formal and casual uniform days, “Shoes must be all black and have closed toes and a back that covers the heel: running shoes (sneakers) are permitted.” This includes the logos, laces and soles on your shoes. If you have to ask, then you probably know the answer. It is awesome to see that most students have had the correct footwear for the first days of school. If you have other colors on your shoe, please make sure to get your new shoes ASAP. If you use Naver or Coupang you can find links to several shoes that meet our requirements. Many shoe stores such as ABC Mart also carry all black shoes in Nike, Reebok, Sketchers, etc.
Hoods and Hats: Hoods and Hats can be used outside for weather protection. Once you enter indoors (classroom, hallway, stairwell, cafeteria, lobby, etc.) all hats and hoods should be removed.
Responsible Use Policy (RUP) - It is important to review our Responsible Use Policy. During the school day, we should be using our Macbooks for academic purposes, only. Students should not be shopping, gaming, or visiting non-academic websites during the school day.
Locker Issues: Please please follow these steps if you have any problem with your locker. First, try to solve the problem yourself. Second, ask your advisor for support. Third, complete this form.
Playground Expectations: The MS has access to the playground area during lunch recess on Tuesdays and Fridays. Do not climb on the outside of slides, and make sure you do not hang upside-down on the monkey bars. The monkey bars are for swinging with hands only.
Stairwells - We need to be mindful of our behavior in the stairwells, especially during passing times and at lunchtime.
We do not want too many students trying to squeeze up the stairs. This leads to pushing, and that leads to accidents and injuries. It is also not practicing social distancing. Students really should be walking up and down the stairs, no more than two at a time, and keeping to the right.
The volume level should be low. There is always another grade or two that are in classes. As you move about the building you need to "turn off your outdoor voices.
Please continue to follow our uniform policy. Students are expected to be in the proper uniform at all times and to wear their uniforms properly. Non-uniform clothing should not be worn on campus during the school day.
