Dear DRAGONS
This is a super exciting time of the year. We are finishing our classes, getting ready for summer, and maybe even getting ready for high school. It’s normal to be elated at times of positive change. However, we have to be careful not to let our excitement get the better of us. We have two more weeks of school and the expectations we have are still in place. These expectations are to keep our community safe and orderly and they don’t change just because it's’ May or June. Let’s make sure to meet community expectations and avoid unpleasant consequences over the last two weeks. You can do it!
MS DRAGONS,
Congratulations to all the athletes for your successes throughout the year. Friday’s banquet was awesome. It was great to see so many of our students who participated in athletics this year. Keep getting involved and keep the DRAGONS Spirit alive!!!!
Monday Late Start: This Monday is the last late start of the school year. Classes begin at 10:00 am and all students should begin arriving on campus at 9:40 am. The adjusted schedule is posted below
Behavior Reminders: We have 2 weeks of school left. It is easy to get excited and make mistakes. Now is the time to be extra mindful of the choices you make. Don’t let foolish mistakes ruin some of the fun activities we have planned to finish out the year. We are all accountable for our actions.
Library: It is time to return library materials. Make sure you get all books return so you and your parents do not got emails and phone calls about missing items.
Connecting Language: It is the responsibility of all students to politely remind their friends to use the connecting language at school. If you are in a group that is not using the connecting language, you are responsible for the groups actions.
We are coming down the home stretch Grade 6 students! Last week in advisory we looked back at all of the experiences we had during the school year. This week in advisory we will be preparing for a ‘Step Up’ meeting we will have with Grade 5 students. While this is a fun time of the year, please remember a few things:
Be kind to one another. This is a time of the year when social problems often pop up. You want to finish the school year positively and don’t want your final memories of Grade 6 to be about an argument you had with a classmate.
Be kind to your teachers. Your KISJ teachers care very much about you and your growth. Take a moment and recognize a teacher you noticed working hard to make sure you learned as much as possible this year.
Be kind to yourself. Take care of yourself by getting a lot of sleep each night, limiting your screen time, playing outside, and relaxing when you are not at school.
Congratulations on completing your last summative of G7! This week we will be a Celebration of Learning, as we begin the final integrated project of the year. You will get to show off what you have learned and apply it to something new.
We have normal classes this week. Be good to each other and yourselves. This will be your last week of normalish classes in middle school. Make sure you are prepared for the promotion ceremony with your black dress shoes and blazer next week. Make good choices!
MS Library would like to share important dates for circulating library books & textbooks.
Monday, 27th May - Friday, 31th May: Library inventory
There will be NO access to the books. This means that the shelves are completely off-limits.
Tuesday, 4th June: Every textbook must be returned.
This is for everyone - students, teachers, and staff.
If you have OVERDUE BOOKS, please bring them back to the library. If you are having trouble with your SORA reading or want to connect, We can Help!
Library at Recess: We are going back to the old survey for lunch recess. Please complete the proper grade-level form. The form will be opened each day at 8:00 am and closed each day at the end of class, right before lunch or earlier if the signups reach 30 students. A maximum of 30 students can sign up. If you really want to come to the library for a quiet reading time, please make sure to sign up early. When space is filled, the signup form will be closed.
DRAGONS STARS! Too often we focus on improving behavior and not necessarily celebrating all the awesome things our students do. Each week, I hear from so many teachers about some pretty cool, kind, and amazing things you do. Here are some of the DRAGONS STARS that shone brightly last week!
We also know there are many acts of awesomeness that sometimes go unseen. Thank you to everyone who is committed to making our community and better, kinder, and safer place for all.
Our next event will be on May 31. We will then have our biggest Clash of DARGONS event of the year, on Field Day - June 3. The Harabang could be yours!
The Harabang could be yours!
The standings are up-to-date! Here is the slideshow with name lists, game rules, and the standings. (If your name is missing please contact Mr. Boland right away and let him know.)
Current Student Ambassadors
The end of year student ambassador party will be held on Friday, May 31st at recess and lunch time. We will be having a pizza lunch celebration to end the school year.
This year is the first year where we will have several student ambassadors who have been with the program for all 3 years of middle school!! We are so proud of all the students who have been a part of the student ambassador program this year and have been helping new students, helping out at after-school events and being kind members of the middle school community.

MS Athletics Awards Ceremony & Banquet Dinner
The 2023-2024 MS Athletics Awards Ceremony & Banquet Dinner was a huge success! Thank you all for attending. This was a great celebration of our DRAGONS spirit! Below is a list of our award recipients:
Thank you to everyone who participated in the auditions this week for next year’s MS Theatre play season. Your individual talents have given me a lot to consider when choosing next year’s play.
If you did not sign up for the audition, but would still like to express your interest in being in the fall musical or play next school year, please fill out the form so that I can communicate any updates with you and your family. Students who sign up will get early information on rehearsal times, audition times materials, etc.
Here is the acting form, and here is the stage and tech crew form. Both will remain open until Friday, May 31.
Big changes are coming for the 2024-25 MS competitive robotics club. Next year, ALL students will be required to try out for a spot on the team. Tryouts will be held at the beginning of the 2024-25 school year and will consist of four main competencies:
VEX IQ Knowledge/Skills
Programming
Technical Writing and Design Notebook Documentation
Teamwork/Collaboration
More information will be released before the end of school so stay tuned. In the meantime, check out the 2024-25 VIQRC game, Rapid Relay.
Grade 8 are working on their Portraits for their end-of-year exhibition. Many students have demonstrated very unique talent and beautiful artwork. We look forward to seeing the framed pieces in the HS for the Graduation Ceremony.
There will be a short quiz to help students review this weekly communication. It is important that all students review this newsletter each week, so they are prepared for the week, and to make sure they are INFORMED. Here is Did you read the Student Weekly Quiz #18
Make sure to check out the MS Office for items that have been misplaced. This should be one of the first places you look for lost or missing items. We often have an overload of hoodies and PE shirts. Please remember to label your belongings.
At the end of each month, we remove all items.
Wednesday After School: On Wednesdays, we have an early dismissal at 325. Students are expected to head off-campus or back to the dorms. Some students have to stay on campus beyond 330 for late pick up or an after school activity. This means we have certain expectations of where students must go from 330 onwards:
Late Pick-ups: Our library is open every day until 5pm. This is where students MUST go if they have to wait after school for the bus or a parent.
After School Activity - ANY student needing to stay for an after-school activity (sports/drama) MUST got to the ES/MSPAC Attendance will be taken in the PAC. Any student not in the PAC will not be permitted to practice that day.
Dorm students: All dorm students must report back to the dorms. If these stusend have an ASA, they can return to the day campus at 4pm.
Deli: The deli is not an option for students before 4pm.
Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) - According to the School Dorm and Life Guide, “Day students may bring PEDs to school but they are to remain out of sight throughout the school day. Staff may confiscate PEDs that are visible during the school day.” PEDs should be in your bags and out of sight while on campus. They should NOT be in your pocket or hand unless it is for an academic purpose. Taking your PEDs to the bathroom during classes or break time is not meeting our school expectations.
Respect - Remember to make sure that the language you use is respectful. Think about the words you use, they reflect who you are. In classrooms, English is the language we use.
Library at Recess: Please complete the proper grade-level form.
Make Sure to bring ID card.
Bicycles, Scooters, and Skateboards: Students should not be riding these vehicles on campus. Students should walk these vehicles through the gate. All students should wear helmets as well.
Uniforms - Uniforms must be worn properly. Club shirts, Ambassador shirts, Team jerseys, hats, and Dorm clothing are NOT part of the casual uniform. ALL students should have their KISJ casual shirt on, even if they are wearing a KISJ hoodie. Respect our community by respecting our uniform.
FAQs
If you are wearing your formal uniform, long sleeve shirts should be tucked in and neckties are worn with the knot at the top of the shirt (not hanging loosely).
Plain white/black shirts purchased in the uniform shop are NOT uniform pieces. They are for wearing under uniform shirts if you choose.
Students are expected to ALWAYS be in uniform when on campus during the school day.
Shoes: The MS and HS have simplified the shoe policy schoolwide. For formal and casual uniform days, “Shoes must be all black and have closed toes and a back that covers the heel: running shoes (sneakers) are permitted.” This includes the logos, laces and soles on your shoes. If you have to ask, then you probably know the answer. It is awesome to see that most students have had the correct footwear for the first days of school. If you have other colors on your shoe, please make sure to get your new shoes ASAP. If you use Naver or Coupang you can find links to several shoes that meet our requirements. Many shoe stores such as ABC Mart also carry all black shoes in Nike, Reebok, Sketchers, etc.
Hoods and Hats: Hoods and Hats can be used outside for weather protection. Once you enter indoors (classroom, hallway, stairwell, cafeteria, lobby, etc.) all hats and hoods should be removed.
Responsible Use Policy (RUP) - It is important to review our Responsible Use Policy. During the school day, we should be using our Macbooks for academic purposes, only. Students should not be shopping, gaming, or visiting non-academic websites during the school day.
Locker Issues: Please please follow these steps if you have any problem with your locker. First, try to solve the problem yourself. Second, ask your advisor for support. Third, complete this form.
Playground Expectations: The MS has access to the playground area during lunch recess on Tuesdays and Fridays. Do not climb on the outside of slides, and make sure you do not hang upside-down on the monkey bars. The monkey bars are for swinging with hands only.
Stairwells - We need to be mindful of our behavior in the stairwells, especially during passing times and at lunchtime.
We do not want too many students trying to squeeze up the stairs. This leads to pushing, and that leads to accidents and injuries. It is also not practicing social distancing. Students really should be walking up and down the stairs, no more than two at a time, and keeping to the right.
The volume level should be low. There is always another grade or two that are in classes. As you move about the building you need to "turn off your outdoor voices.
Please continue to follow our uniform policy. Students are expected to be in the proper uniform at all times and to wear their uniforms properly. Non-uniform clothing should not be worn on campus during the school day.
