Hey Dragons!
We have had a busy last few weeks—lots of excitement with National History Day, KISAC Swimming, Table tennis, and KISAC Volleyball. Lots of our students won awards and medals and that is super exciting. I am also incredibly proud of all the students who worked hard, gave their best, and still didn’t get the results they hoped for. I have heard so many stories from your coaches about how you all supported each other, how you showed kindness and sportsmanship to your opponents, and how you were great examples of what it means to be a Dragon. Fighting!
Thank you to all the students who made an extra effort to use the connecting language throughout the week during all their classes except for Korean, Spanish, and Chinese. You have helped improve your language schools and helped make KISJ a safer place for all. We are still collecting your feedback on connecting language at school. Please take a minute to complete this follow-up survey, if you have not done so already. All the information you share is helping make the school a safer, more inclusive community.
Uniforms - This week it was mentioned that several of our students have not been wearing the uniform properly. The 3 main issues are short skorts, ties not up to the neck, and long-sleeved shirts not tucked in. Students with uniforms that are not meeting expectations will be warned and given an LLB to help communicate with parents. Repeat offenders will meet with Mr. Boland to discuss what additional support students need to meet the school’s expectations.
Smart Pass - Grade Levels have started trialing a digital hall pass system for using needing to leave class during lessons. The purpose of this is to give the school data on how many minutes students are missing from classes. Please remember, with 45-minute classes, the expectation is that students are only leaving class for emergencies. Every 45 minutes, students have 5 minutes to go to the bathroom or get a drink.
Social Media - I have been speaking with students from all grades regarding their social media presence. I came across an interesting quote from LONG ago by English author, Cyril Connelly. Connelly writes, in a time before computers and social media, “Better to write for yourself and have no public, than to write for the public and have no self.” Too often we post on social media thoughts and feelings that are meant to get a reaction from others. It is really important for everyone to know that what you write reflects who you are. Make sure that reflection is of someone you would be proud of.
On Campus after school: We are expecting the weather to start getting better in the coming weeks and months. Some students have expressed an interest in staying on campus after school and using the field or basketball courts if they are available. To do this, students need a supervisor to be present in case of an injury or other emergency. If you and your friends would like to stay after school and play, message Mr. Boland 24 hours in advance and he will find someone to supervise. Wednesday this is not possible because all MS teachers have meetings to attend. Please make sure you leave campus within 10 minutes of class ending on Wednesdays.
Food after lunch: Several times last week students were spoken to about carrying cookies, bread, and dessert out of the cafeteria at lunch. Students should consume all the food in the cafeteria. Many students are waiting until the last minute to get these final bites. Please use your time wisely in the cafeteria. We are constantly monitoring and ensuring that students have enough time to eat.
We are coming down the home stretch of Quarter 3 Sixth Graders! At this point in the school year, you have been working closely with your classmates for a long seven months. It is a time when frustrations and conflicts tend to pop up between friends and classmates. Please remember the following:
Communicate your ideas and feelings calmly and kindly
Presume positive intentions, be empathetic and try to consider the pressures of other people
Speak with a teacher, counselor, or administrator for support with your problems. Smalls conflicts that are not solved can become bigger problems later
This week is our trip to Busan! Please bring your ID or appropriate documents to your advisor on Monday, this is what you need to get on the plane. We are looking forward to our trip, so in preparation, we will be talking about making good choices in advisory.
We will be doing a lot with the 4.3 Project in the next couple weeks. The end of the quarter is coming up so check in with your teachers if you have questions about your grade. You have been doing well using connecting language, but it has started to slip again. Please make sure you are using the connecting language when in classrooms.
Battle of the Books: This past Saturday was Battle of the Books (BOB) with ES & MS. Considering we didn’t meet often but our 3 teams participated well. We had 15 teams total.Students had a lot of fun decorating cakes and answering questions about the five books they read, Kahoot style!
The standings are up-to-date! Here is the slideshow with name lists, game rules, and the standings. (If your name is missing please contact Mr. Boland right away and let him know.)

Hello everyone! From our cast and crew to you, the HS Theatre Ensemble would like to invite you to attend our play, Clue: On Stage (High School Edition)! Adapted from the 1985 film by Sandy Rustin, Clue follows 6 guests who find themselves embroiled in a murder mystery at Boddy Manor. As they navigate the mansion's rooms and secret passages, the suspects must unravel the clues to uncover the identity of the murderer, the weapon used, and the room where the crime occurred.
Performances will take place on March 14 and 15 at 7:00pm, and March 16 at 2:00pm in the HS PAC. Tickets will be sold for ₩5,000 (or ₩20,000 for 5 tickets) in the MS Cafeteria during lunch, in front of the 3rd floor entrance of the HS PAC before each performance, and during the Spring Fair on March 16.
Clue: On Stage is appropriate for students ages 13 and up, and MS students must have an adult supervisor with them - so convince your teachers to host an advisory dinner and a show 😊
HERE IS A TRAILER OF THE PLAY - We hope to see you there!
The table will be cleared as March has begun.
Make sure to check out the MS Office for items that have been misplaced. This should be one of the first places you look for lost or missing items. We often have an overload of hoodies and PE shirts. Please remember to label your belongings.
At the end of each month, we remove all items.
Wednesday After School: On Wednesdays, we have an early dismissal at 325. Students are expected to head off-campus or back to the dorms. Some students have to stay on campus beyond 330 for late pick up or an after school activity. This means we have certain expectations of where students must go from 330 onwards:
Late Pick-ups: Our library is open every day until 5pm. This is where students MUST go if they have to wait after school for the bus or a parent.
After School Activity - ANY student needing to stay for an after-school activity (sports/drama) MUST got to the ES/MSPAC Attendance will be taken in the PAC. Any student not in the PAC will not be permitted to practice that day.
Dorm students: All dorm students must report back to the dorms. If these stusend have an ASA, they can return to the day campus at 4pm.
Deli: The deli is not an option for students until after 4pm.
Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) - According to the School Dorm and Life Guide, “Day students may bring PEDs to school but they are to remain out of sight throughout the school day. Staff may confiscate PEDs that are visible during the school day.” PEDs should be in your bags and out of sight while on campus. They should NOT be in your pocket or hand unless it is for an academic purpose. Taking your PEDs to the bathroom during classes or break time is not meeting our school expectations.
Respect - Remember to make sure that the language you use is respectful. Think about the words you use, they reflect who you are. In classrooms, English is the language we use.
Library at Recess: Please complete proper grade-level form should you want to go to the library instead of going out to the MS Field during recess time.
The form will be opened each day at 8:10 am and close each day at the end of class, right before lunch. The form will be located in the Reminders Section of the Student Weekly.
Bicycles, Scooters, and Skateboards: Students should not be riding these vehicles on campus. Students should walk these vehicles through the gate. All students should wear helmets as well.
Uniforms - Uniforms must be worn properly. Club shirts, Ambassador shirts, Team jerseys, hats, and Dorm clothing are NOT part of the casual uniform. ALL students should have their KISJ casual shirt on, even if they are wearing a KISJ hoodie. Respect our community by respecting our uniform.
FAQs
If you are wearing your formal uniform, long sleeve shirts should be tucked in and neckties are worn with the knot at the top of the shirt (not hanging loosely).
Plain white/black shirts purchased in the uniform shop are NOT uniform pieces. They are for wearing under uniform shirts if you choose.
Students are expected to ALWAYS be in uniform when on campus during the school day.
Shoes: The MS and HS have simplified the shoe policy schoolwide. For formal and casual uniform days, “Shoes must be all black and have closed toes and a back that covers the heel: running shoes (sneakers) are permitted.” This includes the logos, laces and soles on your shoes. If you have to ask, then you probably know the answer. It is awesome to see that most students have had the correct footwear for the first days of school. If you have other colors on your shoe, please make sure to get your new shoes ASAP. If you use Naver or Coupang you can find links to several shoes that meet our requirements. Many shoe stores such as ABC Mart also carry all black shoes in Nike, Reebok, Sketchers, etc.
Hoods and Hats: Hoods and Hats can be used outside for weather protection. Once you enter indoors (classroom, hallway, stairwell, cafeteria, lobby, etc.) all hats and hoods should be removed.
Responsible Use Policy (RUP) - It is important to review our Responsible Use Policy. During the school day, we should be using our Macbooks for academic purposes, only. Students should not be shopping, gaming, or visiting non-academic websites during the school day.
Locker Issues: Please please follow these steps if you have any problem with your locker. First, try to solve the problem yourself. Second, ask your advisor for support. Third, complete this form.
Playground Expectations: The MS has access to the playground area during lunch recess on Tuesdays and Fridays. Do not climb on the outside of slides, and make sure you do not hang upside-down on the monkey bars. The monkey bars are for swinging with hands only.
Stairwells - We need to be mindful of our behavior in the stairwells, especially during passing times and at lunchtime.
We do not want too many students trying to squeeze up the stairs. This leads to pushing, and that leads to accidents and injuries. It is also not practicing social distancing. Students really should be walking up and down the stairs, no more than two at a time, and keeping to the right.
The volume level should be low. There is always another grade or two that are in classes. As you move about the building you need to "turn off your outdoor voices.
Please continue to follow our uniform policy. Students are expected to be in the proper uniform at all times and to wear their uniforms properly. Non-uniform clothing should not be worn on campus during the school day.
