Khan Academy Kids is Khan Academy’s early learning solution for preschool-2nd grade. It’s designed specifically for early learners, and it helps kids build a strong foundation in both math and literacy.
We believe in teachers’ expertise. Teachers are not only involved in the design experience, but we’ve also designed the program to work in tandem with them so they have a high level of control over what students experience.
How you might use Khan Academy Kids
As a teacher, you can decide between three implementation approaches.
Option 1: The Personalized Learning Path
You might decide to use the Personalized Learning Path. The adaptive learning path is able to personalize lessons across all of our domains and serve up developmentally-appropriate content based on where each student is at.
Option 2: Teacher Assignments
If you would like more control over what students are working on, you can assign specific lessons to a student, a group of students, or your whole class.
Step 1: You assign lessons that align with what you’re teaching in class.
Step 2: Students complete the assignments independently.
Step 3: You review student scores.
Step 4: Create new assignments based on those scores. Students who scored below 50% receive the “Basic” version of the lesson. Students who scored 50-79% should receive two “Practice” lessons and students who scored 80-99% should receive one “Practice” lessons. Students who receive 100% should move on to another concept.
Option 3: Student-directed learning in the Library
The Library has hundreds of lessons, books, videos and you may choose to allow students to explore this content during free time or when they have finish an activity.
For more information on these options, see the Three Ways to Play section.
Two platforms to supercharge teaching and learning
Our program is available for students to access on mobile devices, including Chromebooks, tablets, and phones. Teacher reports can be accessed from your web dashboard on your computer. Here, you can review and assign lessons and track student progress using our easy-to-interpret data reports.

“I began using Khan Kids last school year and immediately fell in love. We use it every single day in my classroom and when we do, I look around and see 21 independent learners that are engaged in work that is a right fit for them.”

Technology in the classroom has changed so much in the last few years, especially for our youngest learners. Not too long ago, we would have been shocked to see kids in preschool or Kindergarten classes with 1:1 devices. Classrooms used to have a single desktop computer that could only be accessed during center time. Nowadays, technology is embedded in all instruction. Kids must know how to use tech in order to complete their school work on any given day—it’s essentially a prerequisite skill. Learn how some of our Khan Academy District Partner teachers are supporting technology in a positive way!
