If your school or district decides to use Khan Academy Kids at home, communicate to families how it will support their child’s learning within the school year. This could include how often you assign lessons so families can know when to check for new assignments. Have a clear, regular pattern when you assign lessons to establish a routine. For example, you might set the Due Date for weekly assignments to Mondays so families know when to expect them.
Keep students motivated by setting goals and providing incentives when goals are accomplished. Example goals:
Get a green or yellow checkmark on all lessons.
Complete 80% of weekly lessons (4 out of 5, 8 out of 10).
Complete 10 lessons each week by playing the personalized learning path.
Assignments in class
If students are using Khan Kids exclusively within the classroom, you can keep families updated on student progress in one of two ways:
Select "Class Reports" and then "Assignments" using your teacher dashboard. Choose the student's name and dates you would like. Select "Print" and then either print and send it home or "Save as a PDF" to send it home.
Send your Class Code to families. They can sign in to see progress on assignments from the Assignments tab. Click here for instructions on finding and sending your unique Class Code to families.
Assignments at home
Use Khan Academy Kids to facilitate a strong school-to-home connection. By assigning lessons regularly, families can stay updated on the academic topics you teach in class.
With Khan Kids, you can create assignments in advance, allowing you to assign lessons that work best for you and families in your class. You can use Due Dates to determine when students will receive the lessons you have assigned. You can learn more about Due Dates here.
Daily Option: Assign three daily activities (e.g., one math, one reading, and one book). Set the lesson Due Dates so that 3 lessons appear daily on student devices.
Weekly Option: Assign five activities per week. Set all five lessons to have the same Due Date (e.g., every Monday). Students can complete lessons at their own pace over the week.
There are many ways to assign lessons and communicate student progress. Please adjust to fit your needs. For more suggestions with additional detail, see the section below: “Using Khan Kids for virtual learning.”
Personalized learning path at home
Alternatively, you can facilitate a school-to-home connection by encouraging families to use Khan Academy Kids at home. Rather than selecting lessons to assign, you can direct families toward the personalized learning path, which automatically cycles through topics like math, language arts, and social-emotional learning. Content along the path surfaces at a level corresponding to how the child is doing in the app. Access the learning path by tapping the big play button from the student view.
