Extension at KGV
At KGV, students have access to extension opportunities through our RTI framework, with 3 tiers of extension:
Tier 1: In-class extension
Class teachers can provide opportunities for extension when students have mastered the content and skills being taught to the class. This may include going deeper into the topic, exploring related topics, or moving ahead with the curriculum. If you have any questions about in-class extension, please contact the class teacher directly.
Tier 2: School-wide extension
Students have various opportunities to extend themselves in school but outside of the classroom. Students can choose to sign up for a range of CAS activities. Subject departments or individual teachers may organise/coordinate a range of competitions in school or between schools. Students can also apply to a range of student leadership roles in school. If you have any questions about such opportunities, please monitor the daily student bulletin and weekly parent newsletter, or contact the coordinating teacher or head of department directly.
Tier 3: External extension
Students can choose to take part in a range of extension activities/courses offered by external organisations for secondary school-aged students. Please see below for more information.
Tier 2 Department-led Extension
Each subject department may organise or coordinate a range of extension opportunities, such as competitions and special events. We are in the process of adding these to this website. Please click on the subject links below to view the details. If you have any questions about these opportunities, please contact the teacher in charge directly.
Tier 3 External Extension
There are several universities and other organisations in Hong Kong that provide external extension courses for secondary school students. These are great opportunities for students to extend themselves within their areas of interest and strength. They also provide students with the opportunity to connect with other students from around Hong Kong who share similar interests, and give students insights into possible future university courses and career pathways.
The list below has the names of some of the extension programmes that our students have taken part in previously. Click on the link for each one to find out more. Each provider offers a wide range of courses targeting different ages and topic areas. These courses may take place in person and/or online, and may start at various times throughout the year. Each provider also has different entry requirements and application procedures, such as minimum scores on standardised tests, open applications, school recommendations, or school nominations. Each provider may also charge a fee for their courses, and/or offer scholarships. KGV does not have any formal relationships with any of the providers and does not receive any portion of any fees paid to them.
The Application Process and References/Recommendations/Nominations
Each external provider has its own application process, requirements and deadlines. Please read the provider's website carefully before deciding whether or not to apply, especially for any entry requirements relating to age as well as any application/course fees.
Each external provider may ask for a school reference, school recommendation and/or school nomination.
References: these are usually short written comments.
Recommendations: these are usually through a form from the external provider.
Nominations: these are usually where the school is allowed to nominate a limited number of students for a particular course or priority in the application process.
Please note that if any references/recommendations/nominations are required from KGV, the internal KGV application deadline to request this is often 1-2 school weeks before the deadline published on the provider's website to allow time for feedback to be collected from teachers.
When writing references/recommendations or deciding which students to give a school nomination to, students will be considered holistically. This means that as well as considering a student's academic achievement and potential, we will also consider whether a student is likely to be a positive ambassador for the school. Factors may include:
Standardised testing scores (e.g. MidYIS, Yellis, ALIS, NGRT, PTM, etc.)
Academic grades (e.g. MYP, IGCSE, IB DP, IB CP & BTEC grades achieved and/or current attainment grades)
Involvement and engagement in school events and activities
Behaviour
Attendance and punctuality
Feedback from Tutors, Heads of Year and/or subject teachers
Any other relevant information
Some providers allow schools to only nominate a limited number of students, which means KGV will need to make a decision about which student(s) to give the school nomination to. In these situations, some deserving students may not be able to receive a school nomination.
