Reflective Journal

Below is my reflective journal for my 2018 Field Period at Keuka College!

January 2nd, 2018

Today I started my day by entering the office at 10AM to greet my supervisor. We began speaking about my plans for this field period and began breaking it down by week with the projects he wanted me to do. We created a rough schedule and then began my first task. We had to see how much it cost to pay our desk workers and then see how much it would cost with the new minimum wage that went up. Then we had to see how much it would save if we were to cut the amount of hours that our workers worked. We worked on this for a while and then decided to cut the hours back by 1 hour a night. Then we would save $5000 a year. Next, we began working on the work schedule for the Winter RA’s and then sent them an email asking for their availability. It was a productive day!

Today was a slower day. We worked on getting the desk working things finalized. Once we all decided on the way to break up the shifts, I emailed my desk workers and asked them to fill out a doodle poll to choose the days they work best with. Once everyone answers this, I will be able to schedule them! I was on duty last night and tonight I will be again as I cover for someone.

Today was good. I worked most of the day on evaluations my desk working staff, which I almost finished. I plan to do that tomorrow. I also worked and aided in the supervision of Robert Lonie, a differently able man who works in the Student Affairs department. I learned a lot from that such as patience and communication. Finally, my supervisor taught me how to peel a carrot.

January 5th, 2018

Today I scheduled my entire staff for the springs semester. I learned how to use the Google Calendar on the computer and scheduled their weekdays and weekends. Also, I finished my desk working staff evaluations as well so it was very productive! I also learned about student conduct and how the hearings and outcomes work.

January 8th, 2018

Today I focused on actually making the schedule for my desk workers. They let me know when they were available and so I put them into the google calendar we use. I also began polling them to choose weekend shifts. Then, I attended a meeting with Tim and BJ with Paul Posener (Senior Director of Student Affairs) and working on a housing reconciliation. It was a good day!

January 9th, 2018

Today I began working on scheduling my 1:1 meetings with my staff. Once those are done and finalized, I will be well on my way to getting ready for next semester. I was invited to the Student Affairs Staff meeting tomorrow so I am very excited to go and learn from that. I also am pairing with Jack’s and Mikey to do a presentation on what it is like to be a resident assistant at KC, and how the office of Housing and Residence Life operates.

January 10th, 2018

Today was pretty relaxing. I finished scheduling all of my 1:1 meetings with my staff which was a huge event for me. Then, I was lucky to attend the Student Affairs staff meeting with all members of student affairs and I truly learned a lot about what the division does outside of Residence Life and Housing.

January 11th, 2018

Today I read a chapter of the book titled “The Fuzzy and the Techie” in preparation for the Fribolin lecture. I then had a conversation regarding Resilience and childhood trauma. I participated in the survey that we took for resilience and it will be used for RA training in a few weeks.

January 15th, 2018

Today I continued scheduling my desk workers. That took a good chunk of my day because I had to wait for them to get back to me. Then, I created door decorations for my staff which was a lot of fun!

January 16th, 2018

Today we rearranged the office of housing and residence life and I was given a workplace in the office. I am very excited to utilize this space as my own. Furthermore I aided in helping with housing information for a few residents moving to my building. Then, I attended the Spring Programming meeting and learned about the events going on campus next semester and how the Student Affairs team prepares for them.

January 17th, 2018

Today I continued working on scheduling my desk workers. They are slowly getting back to me and I only have a few shifts left to cover. I hope to finish that tomorrow.

January 18th, 2018

Today began with talking to my desk workers about their schedules. Then, I learned a lot about Google Calendar and actually found time in my schedule to create office hours for myself. I was able to forward this along to my coworkers so they can see my schedule and know when I am going to be in the office. Next, I will send this information to my residents and staff.

January 19th, 2018

Today I officially finished the desk working schedule. I began working on organizing my desk and getting things printed off for my office hours/bulletin board. Its my moms birthday!

January 22nd, 2018

Today I continued organizing my desk and worked on a project with Michelle Wojner to create an on campus 5k. It was a good conversation and I think it's going to be fun!

January 23rd, 2018

Today I wrote a letter to each of my staff members on my typewriter. I ended up having a pretty large crowd because of how loud and peaceful it sounds. Then, I listened to a phone interview for a potential RA candidate

January 24th, 2018.

Today I began working on the “walk the line” program I will be running at winter RA training next week. I also spent time with Anneliese working on the presentation we will be giving next week!

January 25th, 2018

Today, for the most part, I finished working on the walk the line program. All I need to do now is work on organizing it and making it aesthetically pleasing.

January 26th, 2018

Today was my last day! I worked on finishing up the Walk the Line activity. I went over it with my coworkers and finalized it. I am looking forward to doing this activity with my coworkers and friends. My Field Period has been a blast and I’m glad I got this experience!
