Dual Credit Basics
Dual Credit is coursework completed through a college/university for college credit and high school credit simultaneously.
There are 4 types of dual credit courses:
Simon Kenton Based In-person Courses - These courses are taught on SK's campus and students must be present to attend.
Simon Kenton Based Online Courses - These courses are offered online, but are composed of fellow SKHS students (and at times other high school's students). These courses are asynchronous, meaning students complete at a time that works for them.
College/University Based Courses - These courses are taught in-person at one of the local colleges. Students must provide their own transportation to and from the college campus.
College Online Courses - These courses are offered through the college and also open to college students.
How much will it cost?
Dual credit courses are offered to high school students at a dual credit rate. The rate for the 25-26 school year is $97 per credit hour with most courses being 3 credit hours. Students are responsible for tuition, books and any certification tests. Juniors & Seniors are able to get 2 general education courses paid for each year through the Dual Credit Scholarship. Grades 9-12 may also get 2 eligible classes paid for per year by the Work Ready Scholarship - these are career & technical education courses. It is the student's responsibility to apply for the scholarships (the process will begin in September AND students will be NOTIFIED when it is time) and to know which type of scholarship applies to the course(s) they are taking. Students are responsible for purchasing textbooks (whether print or online) and any other related materials/costs - even for classes that are covered by a scholarship.
Gateway students do not need to pay their tuition until later in the semester - you will not get kicked out of your class!
NKU students may wait to pay their tuition until later in the semester - you will not get kicked out of your class!
Thomas More University students must pay their tuition by the 1st day of classes. You will get a refund if you utilize a scholarship.

How does dual credit affect a student's schedule ?
Students are responsible to be at Simon Kenton when they have classes scheduled at Simon Kenton. If a student is taking an online college course they will have a dual credit placeholder on their schedule. Usually the placeholder is during 1st or 6th period. This allows for students to come to school either later or leave school earlier. Students who do not drive and/or students who may need to take an SK class during 1st/6th periods will have SWS (School Within a School) listed on their schedule. They will more than likely be assigned to the Library during that period. If a student has a dual credit placeholder on their schedule but needs to stay at SK, the student must communicate this to Ms. Currin so that their schedule can be altered. Students with the dual credit placeholder must complete the district transportation consent form & a one-time verbal confirmation from a parent/guardian is needed each year.
Students who are taking College Based/College Online Courses are expected to follow the college's school calendar. Missing a class due to a Kenton County School's holiday or scheduled break is not an excused absence for the college. Students must follow attendance procedures set by their college instructor / listed in the course syllabus for the dual credit course. An excused absence for SKHS is not automatically excused at the college.
How do I apply for dual credit?
Current SK students in grades 9-11 will have the opportunity to indicate their plans to take dual credit next school year in the Spring. Students will be notified when the SKHS Dual Credit Google Form is live through announcements, Infinite Campus and/or email. Students will also be able to indicate that they wish to take dual credit during the 25-26 school year scheduling process later in the spring semester.
Scholarship Programs for Dual Credit Students - Preferences & Completion of Application
STUDENTS WILL BE NOTIFIED WHEN IT IS TIME TO COMPLETE THIS PROCESS - students cannot complete this process until after the start of the school year!!
Fall Deadline - OCTOBER 1
Spring Deadline - MARCH 1
Students in grades 11 & 12 are eligible to use 2 Dual Credit Scholarships ( for general education classes) per year.
Students in grades 9-12 are eligible to use 2 Work Ready Scholarships ( for technical classes) per year.
VERY IMPORTANT CHANGE BEGINNING THE 2022-2023 SCHOOL YEAR: The Dual Credit Scholarship can only be applied to general education courses – meaning they can’t cover courses that are Work Ready Scholarship eligible. Work Ready Scholarship eligible classes are CTE courses (technical education courses). These are usually courses taken at Gateway (non-general education courses). However, if you are taking LDR 160 or HEA 135 through NKU or BAS 120 Personal Finance (covers the financial literacy graduation requirement for Class of 2029 and beyond) through Gateway you may use a Work Ready Scholarship! This is important to note if you are taking more than 2 general education courses or you are a 10th grader taking either LDR 160, HEA 135 or BAS 120!
You should fill out your preferences for both fall and spring if you already know which courses you plan on taking next semester. It is very important that you choose the correct institution as well. It is your responsibility to know which college(s) you are enrolled in for your classes.
PRO TIP: If you see the Work Ready Kentucky Dual Credit link active on your MyKHEAA account you should set preferences as well as your Dual Credit Scholarships even if you believe the course(s) you are taking are not eligible.
You have until OCTOBER 1st to get this done. This is your responsibility as a “dual credit college” student.
Students who have Spring semester classes and didn't set their preferences in the fall will have until March 1st to set their preferences.

This is a GREAT opportunity for any student that will be pursuing a post-secondary degree. Students should consider enrolling in a course or two over the summer!
