People brought new ideas to the colonies such as protected rights and trial by jury. Representative government was also introduced in the colonies. Colonies began as either a Charter or Proprietary colonies. Only white male property owners could vote. The idea of mercantilism was instituted and England passed as series of laws called the Navigation Acts that forced the colonies to sell their goods directly to England.
