Rivalry Between the French and the British
Britain and France were the leading powers
A rivalry between them grew when the British began to show interest in the Ohio River valley
The French built a chain of forts in the Ohio valley to protect their claims
The British began to build a fort in western Pennsylvania that the French seized and called it Fort Duquesne
Militia: a military force made up of ordinary citizens
Fort Necessity: a fort built by George Washington on his march to Fort Duquesne
The French and their Native American allies attacked Fort Necessity and Washington had to surrender and return to Virginia

The French and Indian War was fought between the French and British along with their Native American alias. Native Americans mostly fought along side the French, but one group of Native Americans called the Iroquois Confederacy alliad with the British. Benjamin Franklin created the Albany Plan of Union to try and unite the colonies. The French and Indian War ended with the Treaty of Paris with the British winning and taking over the Ohio River Valley. However, England passed the Proclamation of 1763 which kept colonists from settling the Ohio River Valley.
