Go Mariners!
Click the picture on the right to take you to my blog. I've been known to go off on tangents within my class. So much so that my stories can eat up half a period. Students have told me that I should write a book or at least write my thoughts down. Well...how about a blog & even a podcast! Everyone is doing it. This is a place for some of my out of the ordinary thoughts and insight into various topics meaningful to me. My idea is to connect class content & history with personal experiences or insight.
I have four fantastic kids: Sydney, McKehen, Paytyn, & Sophia. Each unique in their own way.
My son McKehen is a Navy Corpsman. He's been stationed in Japan, Cuba, Hawaii and Mississippi. He is perusing a degree in Public Health.
The oldest is my daughter Sydney. She and her husband Jessy live across the pond in the United Kingdom (England). They travel the world as much as they can. They met and graduated together from Washington State University.
My daughter Paytyn graduated from the University of Montana where she played Division I Soccer for the Griz. Her and her husband Grahm currently live in Grant's Pass, OR. Paytyn recently graduated with her Nursing degree from OHSU and is working at a hospital in Grant's Pass.
The youngest is Sophia who is currently working in town at a local daycare. She has plans to go back to college in a couple years.
Background & Education
When I grew up I wanted to be a "Rock Star". This dream began at the age of 10 when I got the lead role in the musical Oliver Twist in a local production by the now defunct Cascade Players. Once I heard the crowd applause while being under the stage lights the hook was in.
At Mark Morris High School my electives all centered around music for the most part: Band (trombone, French Horn, percussion), Jazz Band, Choir (lead tenor) & Studio One Singers. During my Senior year I formed a rock/pop band called "Output" with two other alumni. We wrote and performed almost 40 songs the next half decade.
I attended Western Washington University my freshman year on a small music scholarship. Classical music wasn't my thing, so the following year I attended a tech school called The Recording Workshop in Massieville Ohio. There I completed a program on Recording & Engineering which landed me an internship position at Synchro Sound Studios in Boston Massachusetts. In Boston I joined my other two band mates in attending the prestigious Berklee College of Music on again a small vocal scholarship. At Berklee we met other mates to complete our band. Next came recording demos to shop, managers, producers, and a music video.
Eventually the band split up and we all went our separate ways. I decided that I wanted to go back to school to get a "real degree". First I went back to Western, but soon realized I needed a fresh start. I came back home and cleaned up some needed credits at Lower Columbia College which allowed me to transfer to Washington State University Vancouver. At WSU I would transform into a lover of academics completing three degrees:
After my second graduate degree I landed a teaching job at Huntington Middle School as a Language Arts and Yearbook teacher. In a couple of years a Social Studies position opened up and I moved over where I currently teach both Washington State & U.S. History. This will be my 18th year teaching at Huntington Middle School.
The reason I chose to go back to graduate school was:
I wasn't using my Master of Public Affairs. In fact I was working in Real Estate and hated it.
On the side I was coaching a boy's U14 soccer team. I realized how much I enjoyed working with the kids.
I missed academia and longed to go back to college.
Teaching seemed like the perfect fit. So I got my emergency sub credentials with the Kelso School District and began to test the waters. Every few days I would take a sub job if I didn't have any Real Estate dealings that day. I loved it. Especially working at the middle schools.
Teaching allowed me coaching opportunities as well. I coached 7th grade girls and boys basketball at Huntington for 8 years. I also coached girls and boys Varsity soccer at Kelso High School for 5 seasons. During that time I got to coach both my son McKehen and daughter Paytyn. When my youngest daughter Sophia was old enough to play Select soccer I coached her teams for 5 seasons until they entered high school.
