Getting Started with Zoom

Focus Mode

Focus mode allows students to stay attentive or work on their tasks while under supervision, without being distracted by others and their tasks. This feature gives the host and co-hosts view of all participants’ videos without other participants seeing each other. This extends into screen sharing, as the host can view and switch between each participant’s shared screen, while the participants can only view their own content. If the host finds a participant’s content should be shared with others, they can easily begin sharing the participant’s screen with others.

Learn more about using Focus Mode.

Attendance Report in Zoom

Through the Zoom website, you can click on Reports to run a Usage Report that shows who was in your Zoom session. It will show whatever name the student joined your session as, so make sure students are joining with their name. The video below shows how to run the report.

Zoom Waiting Rooms

Waiting Rooms Turned On

The Waiting Room feature in your account will be automatically turned on by default to ensure your virtual classes are protected and include only the intended students and participants. Going forward, you must admit your students to the virtual classroom.

How do I admit participants into my class?

It’s simple. As the host, once you’ve started the meeting, you’ll begin to see the number of participants in your waiting room within the Manage Participants icon. Next, select Manage Participants to view the full list. Then, you’ll have the option to admit participants individually by selecting the blue Admit button next to their name or all at once with the Admit All option on the top right-hand side of your screen.

My Waiting Room isn't working.

If you already had meetings scheduled before Waiting Rooms was turned on, you may have to manually enable Waiting Rooms for those meetings.

  1. Go to the Zoom Settings website. Turn on Waiting Rooms.

  2. Click Meetings in the left navigation menu.

  3. Click the meeting you want to add a Waiting Room to.

  4. At the bottom of the page, click Edit This Meeting.

  5. Check "Enable Waiting Room".

Zoom Breakout Rooms

You can put students in their own breakout room so that they can work without distractions while you work with small groups. The video below shows you how to enable Breakout rooms and use them in your Zoom meeting.

Zoom Safety

By default, Zoom is turning on waiting rooms for all meetings so that you can add only who should be in your meeting.

Do NOT post your Zoom links on social media.

Turn off All Participants ability to screen share to prevent students from being able to share their screen. You can also turn off the Chat feature, and turn off the ability to File Share. Participants can be removed at any time by the host (you).

Can I Zoom using a Doc Cam or Mirroring my iPad or other device?

You can easily display a second device when in a Zoom meeting. This simple diagram shows the basic idea. Follow the steps! You may want to do a test Zoom with someone so you are familiar with the steps before using it with your class.
