Important Information:

This strategy helps students see that division starts with a whole which is then divided into equal groups. Having students work through real world problems that they can relate to will help develop this concept.

Multiplication Models

Examples of what students might do:

Example of what students might say: "I counted out 21 beads and drew 3 circles. I started to divide the beads one at a time into each group until all of the beads were gone. I counted how many beads were in each group."

Strategies To Support Student Learning:

  • Have students fair share items with their classmates

  • Use problems students can relate to such as fair sharing a snack or halloween candy

  • Encourage skip counting when counting up items in a group
