Counting Rhythmically

Counting Rhythmically:

When used in multiplication, the student counts on from the first composite number, emphasizing every multiple of the composite. When used in division, the child counts on rhythmically from the smallest number.

Important Information:

During this strategy students will rely heavily on a model to help keep track of counting. This may be objects they can physically move, a drawing or even a number line. Students will use the beginning stages of skips counting where they may count each object individually but put emphasis on the final number. For example if they are counting groups of five they may stress the numbers, 5, 10, 15, 20.

Examples of what students might do:

Examples of what students might say:

"I started at zero and counted up groups of three until I had 5 groups."

"I started at 0 and counted groups of 5 until I reached 15."

Strategies to Support Student Learning:

  • students will need multiple opportunities to work with manipulative and create equal groups (builds the understanding of unitizing)

  • encourage students to use skip counting

  • DO NOT RUSH. This is foundational for building understanding
