Videos for Educators

Important Information:

Students are encouraged to use an open number line while working on this strategy. This will allow student to take jumps of 10's and 1's without having to worry about equal spacing or running out of room. Students should start by placing number on a number line and practice rounding up and rounding down to the nearest 10's.

Examples of what students might do:

Examples of what students might say: "I started at 44 and counted up by tens until I got to 74. I then took away 2."

Strategies to Support Student Learning:

  • Use an open number line to model the problem

  • Practice rounding number up and down to the nearest ten
