Important Information:

This is a beginning strategy for students who are just learning multiplication. Students will often think of a problem as a certain amount of groups each with an equal amount of items. They will them add up each group to determine the answer. For example 5 x 4 may be seen as 5 groups of 4 and then proceed to do 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20

What students might do:

What students might say:

"I added 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 to get to my answer."

"3 x 4 means I have 3 groups of 4 so I added 4 three times."

Strategies to Support Learning:

  • Have students break the multiplication into smaller chunks or known facts. For example 6 x 15 could be looked at as (2 x 15) + (2 x 15) + (2 x 15)

  • Encourage students to set up the problem using an array
