This unit wil examine in detail how atoms are put together as well as their properties. The following learning objectives will be covered:
- Know the names and symbols of the “60 common elements”.
- Discuss the importance of our understanding the structure of the atom.
- Discuss the important scientist and discoveries in the development of the atomic theory.
- Describe the fundamental particles of the atom and their properties.
- Determine the number of protons, neutrons and electrons in an atom, ion or isotope.
- Describe the various types of nuclear decay or other nuclear reactions.
- Define radioactivity and discuss some of its current uses.
- Distinguish between fission and fusion and give examples of each.
- Describe at least three methods of detecting radioactivity.
- Discuss the effects of radiation on life and the beneficial applications of radioactivity.
