This unit wil examine in detail how atoms are put together as well as their properties. The following learning objectives will be covered:

1. Describe the various types of nuclear decay or other nuclear reactions.
2. Define radioactivity and discuss some of its current uses.
3. Distinguish between fission and fusion and give examples of each.
4. Describe at least three methods of detecting radioactivity.
5. Discuss the effects of radiation on life and the beneficial applications of radioactivity.
