Reading/Writing: This week we will begin reading The Watsons Go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis, a historical fiction novel that is set in the 1960s. The story is told from the point of view of fourth-grader Kenny Watson. When Kenny and his family visit Birmingham, Alabama, he learns more about racial injustice and the Civil Rights Movement. In reading this novel, we will analyze characters, character relationships, and character development, among other important aspects of the book.

Band: This week we will be learning about a new type of articulation, the accent. We will also be looking at another longer piece that was intended as a solo, but we will be playing it altogether as a band. Power hour will have a heavy focus on mallets for percussion, and the low brass section will practice lip slurs!

Thursday: Full Band with instruments
