Kindergarten Teacher’s Wish List
We are so excited to welcome your child to the Norton Family! Please work on the following skills over the summer so you’ll be ready for Kindergarten come August!
Be able to independently manipulate clothing (snap, zip, button, etc.).
Be independent with toileting in a public restroom setting. (When in public, let your child experience flushing toilets, which appear different from home, operating sink faucets, accessing soap from dispensers, latching stalls, and operating and utilizing urinals).
Be able to use a tripod grip to hold a pencil.

Be able to operate and cut paper with child-size scissors.
Be able to write their first name and recognize their first name when seen in print.
Be able to count aloud to 10.
Be able to count objects to 5.

School may be closed for the summer, but we don’t want you to forget everything you’ve learned! Please continue to work on the following skills over the break so you’ll be ready for 1st grade come August!
Read daily for 20 minutes (fiction, non-fiction, poetry). Don’t forget to visit the library!
Be able to identify upper and lowercase letters and their sounds.
Be able to identify vowels and consonants.
Keep a summer writing journal of all the fun things you do!
Read, write, and count numbers to 100.
Practice addition and subtraction facts to 10.
Practice cutting with scissors.
Write your first and last name.
Say your birthday by month/day/year, address, and phone number.
Read and write color words.
Use Lexia to practice phonics and reading skills (students returning to Norton)
Know how to tie shoes. Here are some helpful videos you can view.
2nd Grade Teacher’s Wish List
School may be closed for the summer, but we don’t want you to forget everything you’ve learned! Please continue to work on the following skills over the break so you’ll be ready for 2nd grade come August!
Read daily for 20 minutes, including non-fiction. Don’t forget to visit the library!
Write letters and numbers from top to bottom. Know addition and subtraction facts to 20 in your head (practice mental math).
Identify characters, setting, problem and solution in a story.
Be able to retell story events.
Write a complete sentence using beginning capitals and punctuation.
Explain your thoughts in writing.
Be able to state your address and phone number.
Be able to tie your shoes.

Reading
Understand the difference between short and long vowel sounds, and the spelling patterns that affect those.
Identify elements of a story, such as characters, setting, problem, and solution.
Locate answers to questions that are directly found within the text.
Read with expression when appropriate.
Use word solving/word attack skills when met with an unknown word in a text.
Read a variety of genres and note differences between them.
Writing
Form all upper and lower case cursive letters to produce words and sentences in legible cursive.
Write appropriately using parts of speech, capitalization, punctuation, and generalized spelling patterns.
Compose a complete sentence that includes at least 7 words. These sentences should then create a full paragraph of 4-6 sentences.
Compose a variety of writing pieces including narrative, informative, and argumentative.
Math
Add and subtract three-digit numbers with regrouping.
Round to the nearest 10 or 100.
Fluently multiply and divide within 100 (0-10 facts).
Compare fractions and find equivalent fractions.
Understand the difference between area and perimeter; solve area and perimeter problems.
Solve word problems involving any of the four operations.
Know how to type your full email address and password. Email is: firstname.lastname@stu.jefferson.kyschools.us. Password is the same as this year.

Language Arts
Encourage your child to read books all summer, including non-fiction! Don’t forget to visit the library!
Summarize books, articles, poems… aloud and in written form.
Read about characters in Greek Mythology.
Identify the basic parts of speech: nouns, verbs, adjectives, conjunctions, etc.
Write complete sentences with proper capitalization and punctuation.
Restate questions when writing a short answer response.
Math
Know multiplication facts through 12 fluently. (Multiplication by Heart by Mathigon is a great daily 5 minute online resource.) - QR code —--->
Recognize place value positions and value through 100,000.
Practice addition and subtraction problems to the hundred thousand place (with regrouping).
