Classwork
Work that we do in class. This is the majority of the work. This includes writing, math, taking notes, disccussion, focus lessons, games, practice and more. Sadly, there is no way to replicate classwork when students are absent.
Homework
In general, students should have some independent reading time every day at home. 20-30 min a day makes a HUGE difference in a students fluency and enjoyment of reading. Sometimes, students might also have math homework, but in general we complete that in class.
Assessments
We do a lot of short assessments in class. Getting feedback and working to improve is one of the most effective learning strategies in teaching. Ideally, an assessment akes a short amount of time, includes a new understanding, and allows for growth going forward.
Grades
Grades are not perfect representations of learning. Kids are just more complex than a number. I have found that at the beginning of the year kids have more 2's and 3's then they did the last year because they are learning new skills and strategies. I will always meet with you to help put your student's learning in context.
